Sorry to hear about your son. I imagine it's tough to have hyperacusis at that age. Have you approached your GP? Or asked for a referral to a specialist? I think that's probably the best way forward if you haven't already done so. All the best.
Hello, My mother used to suffer hyperacusis. She had it for about a year . I think she got better after awhile. It used to be she couldn’t have any sound on the television. Then she got dementia so we couldn’t discuss it with her but then suddenly she could cope with television. I myself cannot take a lot of television and I believe that some hyperacussis must accompany tinnitus troubles, to some extent.
This is very sad that a 13 year old should be suffering and I think he needs to be looked after even more than us adults . I hope you get to see a specialist with him .
Sorry to hear that your son is in difficulty with this.
Does your son spend a considerable amount of time using a smartphone, other computer or gaming device?
If so, read on. If not, disregard this post.
Hyperacusis might be a symptom of a developing postural issue, i.e. spending too much time with head tipped forwards and shoulders slumped, arms semi-raised owing to over-use of a hand-held or laptop device.
If you think this applies to your son, a visit to a physiotherapist could be a wise move. Take along any device your son uses so that the physio can see exactly how your son might be spending quite a chunk of his day in terms of posture. The physio should be able to identify if there's a problem developing and, more importantly, how to correct it.
Whatever the reason for your son's hyperacusis, I hope you are soon able to find something that can help him.
Many thanks for your reply and this is something i will look into..
