Hello deltec. It takes gallons of willpower to do breathing exercises and it just doesn’t come easy. Just as you had to learn how to ride a bicycle, you have to learn how to breathe mindfully. It might take a few weeks, at a few minutes a time, but what would you be doing otherwise? Watching tv?

A couple of suggestions: Do you have a timer (like a kitchen timer, or something on your phone? Go outside, set it to just two minutes. Breathe slowly in through your nose, out through your mouth. Use your tummy muscles not the top of your chest. Just think about your breathing. When stray thoughts come into your mind, just gently ask them to go away.

Try and do this a few times a day and it might only take you a few days to get accustomed to it.

But even better, when you are walking. Again with the timer if you can, breathe a little more deeply and out again. If no timer, breathe in and out with your steps., counting to fifty breaths.

I say a timer because otherwise you can’t tell how long you’ve been doing it for, and your brain will say “I’ve had enough now” when you’ve done just a little.

Eventually, try to get to ten minutes by increasing the length of time gradually.
