You have to have an MRI just to check whether there is an underlying cause for the tinnitus - which could be treatable. It is a noisy procedure but quite bearable - and how else can a thorough examination take place? Good luck.

I have catastrophic tinnitus with hyperacusis and was unable to withstand the 120 db that machine puts out. Went with a CT scan with dye. Very quiet and quick.

Hi. I am a new sufferer and my Gp wants to reffer me for an mri. Ive had one before for my leg and it is really loud. Do ct scans show just as much ?

Not quite as good as an MRI. Do you have hyperacusis? If not you could probably go with the MRI, just make sure you wear the medical headphones as well as ear plugs good luck.

Hyperacusis is when everyday noise is uncomfortably loud for you. Something as simple as a knife or fork being placed on a china plate can be difficult to manage.

But not quite as conclusive - but understand why.
