Timings of ferrous fumarate..

Given the recommendations regarding when and when not to take this, can anyone suggest the best régime? Leaving sufficient time away from meals, and managing thyroid meds as well as various supplements seems an impossible task!

I fear it’s not quite as simple as that to follow all the guidelines. I don’t think there are enough hours in the day to accommodate all the time gaps that nee to occur between different MEDS, supplements, and meals.

Perhaps it's worth the alternate day approach, which is known to be more effective for some when taking FF and would make life easier having an iron Vit C day and other supplements day.... not necessary if using sublingual versions of Vit D, B12 etc

Heme iron is more straight forward and effective as it doesn't need converting hence less of an issue just keep away from thyroid hormones

Thanks. I’m intending to do alternate date anyway. I will look into the other heme approach.

If you are thinking of buying you can save 10% with FRANKLIN and buying 3 pots makes for free P&P, it has a long use by date 🙂

When I was taking ferrous fumarate 210mg I had to take it with meals. I couldn't tolerate it any other way.

Ferrous sulfate was even worse than ferrous fumarate in terms of tolerance.

I've never tried ferrous gluconate.

It’s all so complicated! FF has to be an hour before eating, two hours after. It has to be two hours away from magnesium. It also has to be two hours away from any thyroid meds (I take both levo and lio, the latter twice a day). And magnesium has to be four hours away from thyroid meds. This is still not taking into account any other supplements and interactions. 😳

Perhaps I’m overthinking it all.🤔

I took my thyroid meds in the morning (and other supps spaced out as appropriate), then iron midday with lunch with added vit C, and then any remaining thyroid meds in the afternoon when I was pregnant. Didn't seem to affect uptake of either as levels rose as expected in the time frame measured. YMMV depending on what else you take and if it absolutly must be taken before food.
