I had one done recently... this only shows your T-score which compares you to a young adult, do you also have a Z-score which is matched to your age? Then they add the comment 'age appropriate bone loss'

Either way NHS aren't interested until you have osteoporosis 😕

If you have been found to have osteopenia then you are very fortunate to have found out at a stage where you can work on your bones.

Do as much as you can now and don’t just wait for osteoporosis to happen.

Check out the various markers that can lead to OP. Hyperparathyroidism, having an overactive thyroid (thyroid and parathyroid are totally different glands) taking steroids, being coeliac, being anorexic, early menopause, are a few of the things that can mess with your bones, then there are lifestyle choices such as eating a lot of junk food, smoking, fizzy drinks, eat vitamin D and calcium containing foods - you’ll see what they are if you look through the link below.

Have a read through this site and see the foods and weight bearing exercises that are recommended theros.org.uk

I can’t emphasise enough how fortunate you are still to be at a stage where you can do something about your scores so go for it and do as much as you can now while you still have time on your side.

Do you know why you were given the DEXA scan

I understand now, you were very sensible to do that. Now you are in a position where you can do something about it - I hate to go on but you are so lucky to have found out while you still have time to help yourself.

If you were 1.4 last time and 1.2 this time then that is an improvement but were you tested on the same machine? That and how the operator positions you can make a difference but to be honest I’d be happy with that.

Just be careful to do suitable weight bearing exercises etc for someone with osteopenia - and don’t do anything that causes any sort of pain, effort is ok but not actual pain anywhere in your body. If you go to a class make sure your instructor is experienced in working with people with your condition.

Hi there

Can I ask please what supplements you’re taking to improve the osteopenia?

I’d recommend 4-5000iu D3 with 300-400mcg of K2(MK7) as well as Magnesium either transdermally (Better You Magnesium oil is great) or in form of Epsom Salt baths 3-4x/week.

Also, as mentioned above, doing weight bearing exercises is really important, it’ll help you!

Best wishes

Anita
