Does anybody know anything about a Thyroglossal duct cyst?

How can it affect the thyroid in adults?

What treatment should be offered? I’m currently on 50mcg levo.

I had a neck scan a few years ago and only found out about this from an offhand comment the ENT mentioned a few weeks ago. I went to the docs yesterday for a swelling just above my left collarbone that has fluid in it and she mentioned it as well. When I came home it made me wonder whether this is something that should be dealt with.

All info I could find online is about paediatric patients so any info would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance

Debbie

I had a thyroglossal duct cyst about 7 years ago. It was way before I had any thyroid problems (that I know of! It's coming up to about 18 months ago that I first had my medichecks test confirming I have Hashimotos, and had been feeling crappy for around a year before that).

I had mine removed, as it was very unsightly and I looked like I was swallowing a golf ball.

No issues with the surgery at all. I do wonder now if there is any link to my thyroid problems, but there isn't really any info out there.

Thank you for the reply, there is very little info on it. I think mine is only small so I don’t think there are any plans to remove it. I am already on Levo but not very well medicated or managed. I too wonder if I have Hashimoto but don’t have antibodies. Waiting for a 2nd consultation with ENT so wanted more info before I spoke to him

I had a thyroglossal cyst removed several years ago because I was struggling to swallow. I couldn’t see it but could feel it a little, however, when removed they said it was very large.

This was since being diagnosed with Hashimotos but have no clue if any effect it has on anything. Doctors seem so vague in this area sadly x

Thank you for the reply. According to the scan I had a few years ago the doctor said I had a small cyst - only a few mm. But what I have found online most of the info says to get rid of it but not much else. But I get the impression they are not considering that as it’s been a few years since the scan. I don’t know whether to push for removal or not Thanks. Debbie

Hiya

I was told they tend to continue to grow though not sure if that is accurate but they told me that is why they tend to remove. Mine was nearer a golf ball size tho but I guess it had to start somewhere !! Lol x

Ive got one! Its about to come out too. Im 44 and was having problems this summer with a lump i couldnt see but could feel inside. It felt like someone had their hand round my throat. Several months later and lots of tests i was diagnosed with it and i have a meeting tomorrow to arrange a date to have it removed via a "Sistrunk Procedure"

Thanks. I had a scan a few years ago and only got told about it from an offhand comment from ENT over phone conversation. Does it make you gag? I’ve noticed that I gag a lot when brushing my back teeth
