This may be a very long post and I thank you for taking the time to read my post. I’ve been having all sorts of problems for some time but have never got an answer to anything. Since August the 11th (I can remember the day!) I’ve felt like a different person....starting with anxiety that I’ve never experienced before. Severe palpations and heart flutter, shaking hands and feeling like a different person. I ended up in a&e with a resting Heart rate of 149 and beats all over the place two weeks ago. They took bloods and said I was dehydrated and sent me home. I went to my gp last week as the heart flutters and fast heart rate/shakes were scaring me! He listened to my symptoms and looked at some others I’ve had the past year or so, he looked at my bloods from the hospital and told me my potassium was very low and he felt I may have an overactive thyroid. I am having the thyroid bloods on Monday.
I wondered if anyone else with over active thyroid had low potassium? After googling the symptoms low potassium does cause heart palpations etc. I am desperate for an answer as I hate feeling like this. I’ve gone from a calm, happy mum to anxious, irrational and someone I have never been before. This person is not me and I feel so frightened. I just want to feel like me again.
Sorry for the rant. And thank you for reading, Lauren xx

Can't answer about the potassium but I can say that your symptoms do match an overactive thyroid. Overactive thyroid also causes heart palpitations... a very fast heartbeat and then it will jump a bit. Very scary. Anxiety and panic attacks...feeling a muscle weakness. Irrational worrying. It is terrifying an I can say that that was me when I was diagnosed hyperactive. I hope that your blood tests gives the answer. In the meantime all you can do is remember that this shaky anxious person is not the real you...it is the illness.
Hi Lalatoot, thank you SO much for your reply, especially so late on a Saturday. It truly means the world to read those words - I really needed to hear them!
and you are right...if the gps suspicions are correct then it is the thyroid and not me...I will be so happy to get the bloods done on Monday and get the results. Thank you so much xx
Hi, I went the same, heart palpitations, shaking hands, feeling so unwell, ended up in hospital as well, I was diagnosed with over active thyroid. After 2 years of meds I am off all now for 3 months, still very tired but hopefully out the other side of it, wish you well as its horrible and no one understands unless they go throgh it, Caroline
How Caroline, thank you so much for your reply. I’m so glad you got your diagnosis and are slowly getting there. I hope you feel normal again soon.
I have felt so awful the last few months and I hope this is a concrete answer for me as at one point I thought I was losing my mind 😩 I’ve always been the calmest, happiest person. I love my life and family and these feelings have just come out of no where. My palpations come and go...did yours do that? I can just be fast asleep and then will wake me up. I never thought I’d be so happy to get a blood test tomorrow! Thank you so much for your reply, just hearing someone else has felt the same really does help. Lauren 😊
Hello...you are describing exactly what happened to me two years ago.. had all the tests and I was Hyper..this went on for a year bloods all over the place /blocking snd replacing did not work..eventually thyroid zapped. With radioactive iodine and bliss for two months !!!then bloods showed I was now hypo and all syptoms came back..still struggling to get levels right..just started on 75mic Wockhardt levo ..and syptoms not too dreadul but bloods show perfect euthyroid...I cant be ...because I still have same sypyoms though level of thyroxin less...am trying different brands at the moment and feel as if nobody cares whether I have syptoms or not as long as bloods are within range..just keep plodding on and use your own mind as to whether or not you need more or less levo...i think i will get there on my own!!! Good luck...
Hello. Thank you so much for your reply. My goodness it’s a journey this thyroid disease...it seems quite hard to find the perfect balance again once it’s gone out of sync 😩 I wish you well, I hope you start to feel well again. I don’t think there is anything worse than the feelings you get from a thyroid imbalance.
The relief I’ve got just from you guys on here echoing my symptoms has helped tenfold. Thank you so much, Lauren 😊
Thank for your kind reply ..thought it might just be me feeling like this..anxiousness and nervousness unheard of in my life...I used to be called cool hand luke when I was juggling career decisions and had staff issues.. but could always think straight... i hope it returns when i have issues sorted with thyroid..trust yourself!!!
