Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested yet, as advised by SeasideSusie in previous post

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also extremely important to regularly test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if Thyroid antibodies are raised

Once you get vitamin test results, members can advise on what supplements you may benefit from

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water . This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

Last Levothyroxine dose should be 24 hours prior to test, (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies or all vitamins

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have special offers, Medichecks usually have offers on Thursdays, Blue Horizon its more random

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's.

Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances are very common too, especially gluten. So it's important to get TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once .

I wouldn't take any thyroid supplement, if I were you. They practically all contains iodine, which isn't a good idea for hypos, and all sorts of other unsuitable things. They are not designed for hypos but for the Worried Well. Best to avoid them completely.

I think you ought to get them tested before doing anything. To make sure a) that they are struggling and b) that it's not something more serious like Addison's.

Thank you, is there a test I can get please and is it private?

Your doctor should be able to do an 8am cortisol blood test. The private test is a 24 hour saliva test, but I'm not sure who does the best one. Ask Susie. :)

There is no "best supplement", we test our core nutrients and if low or deficient we address them.

If you are thinking of a "thyroid supplement" then these are best avoided as they often tend to contain iodine which on the whole should be avoided by us Hypos. Iodine needs to be tested for and only supplemented if found to be deficient, and then under the guidance of an experienced practioner.

So if you test the following, as previously advised and you said you were going to do, then post results with reference ranges, then we can help:

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin
