How do you know when your thyroid is dead 💀?

And how long can it take? (Piece of string I’m guessing)

And does your hashis just settle down to a given replacement dose permanently then?

Just wondered? ........and long for that to happen!

Murphysmum,

As the thyroid tissues dies off, it produces less hormone and we need more replacement meds. There is no definitive time scale as we are all different and previous health and present iron/nutrient levels, etc will impact but when we have suffered Hashi for years and found recovery on optimal dose replacement meds for years, I guess a fair assumption could be that it has completely died.

There are reports that some have managed to reverse hashi damage by managing antibody levels having caught them before too much thyroid gland destruction, that has managed to regenerate. Unfortunately this is rare as most people's understanding of hashi is zilch until it happens to them.

I saw my thyroid gland when having my saliva glands scanned several years ago and it looked like a tiny little shrivelled up pea.

Thank you.As I suspected, it’s very individual.

Interesting about your thyroid though - mine was scanned but many years ago at the start of my thyroid journey - I was very, very much less informed then!

Yeh, mine was scanned too & showed goitres. I didn’t even know what that meant !

😂

When I asked why my throat felt so swollen, I just remember the guy saying to me “yeah, it just swells up and down like any other part of your body”

... even then I thought that was particularly unhelpful!

But little did you know then the same theme was to follow. Just read & read to educate so you are able to look after yourself.

This forum is & always has been a huge support. I have been here since June 2011 when I was first diagnosed but had to delete my first account because it contained such upsetting stuff that I felt (at the time) I could never read again but now regret it.

Never mind coz it is always good to look forward. 😃

I’ve learned so much in the last 18 months.

I’m lucky I worked in medical research and biosciences before, so I had a vague idea and was able to follow a lot of the science-y stuff easily.

It’s still been a big learning curve though!
