Folate

Hi after reading here that we should take folate instead of folic acid, I have bought folate, but my VitB complex has folic acid, I am thinking it is ok to take the B complex and the folate, if the folic acid won’t be absorbed?

You will be fine. Only a few people find it difficult to process Folic Acid - so don't waste a jar. 😊

Thank you. I did wonder as my folate level is low, yet folic acid is in my B complex.

Both are B9 - FA is synthetic and Folate is natural - hence it is Folate that is measured ...

Thank you Marz.

Hi dinglebell does your B vit complex have B12 in it? Some folk say you should take folic acid after taking B12. - but believe you can take the two together. Folates are found in the natural food you are eating such as green vegetables broccoli - collard, curly kale.

Sure the supplements will help.

Hi yes it has B12 and folic acid. I was going to add folate as my blood test folate was on the low side.

What is the total amount of folate/folic acid?

What was your folate result?

No point in taking more than you need, most B vitamins when taken in excess are excreted, but you also waste money if you take more than necessary.

Well the B complex has 400 micrograms (folic acid) which I have been taking for ages, but my last blood showed folate as 14.9 in a range of 2.91 - 50, hence I thought to get the folate, as that didn’t seem high enough. It is 1000 micrograms per pill.

It could just be that you're one of those people that don't do well with folic acid. A good quality B complex would have methylfolate and melthylcobalamin (as B12).

Thanks Susie,

Mine has folic acid prep which just says dicalcium phosphate and folic acid and B12 (cyanocobalamin). They are from Healthspan.

Once these are finished I’ll get the recommended ones...I’m finally learning.....

It is also wise to check your methylation cycle, because if you are an overmethylator your body needs extra folate. If you also have major depression issues you might want to check a possible Pyroluria disorder. Search Google and if signs and simptoms fit I recommend a functional medicine doctor.
