It can mask it, or giving up maybe exacerbate, especially need to have more regular blood tests in the year or so after giving up

There is some suggestion in research that smoking may keep antibodies lower in Hashimoto's

Will it make it worse? So it jst covers up your symptoms?

It may be a trigger that starts it, or it may cover it up and reduce symptoms while still smoking. But that's not a reason to carry on.

But if going to give up you need to retest more regularly as levels may change

Best thing to reduce TPO antibodies for majority of Hashimoto's patients is to be on strictly gluten free diet, and correct dose of Levothyroxine to reduce TSH to around one and FT4 towards top of range and FT3 at least half way in range

Vitamins need to be optimal too

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. Always get actual results and ranges. Post results when you have them, members can advise

Hashimoto's affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone working

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's gut and gluten connection is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first
