Once hypothyroid and taking levothyroxine, iodine is not helpful. levothyroxine contains iodine and too much isn't good. Excerpt:
There are, however, many over-the-counter preparations containing either iodine or thyroid hormones, or both, that will interfere with levothyroxine therapy and should not be taken. These preparations can both aggravate thyroid disorders and alter thyroid function test results. Consequently, problems arise when physicians prescribe levothyroxine based on misleading test results caused by over-the-counter products.

Started 200mcg of iodine via kelp recently and it has had s significant and immediately positive effect.
I am clearly deficient in iodine but always take it with plenty of sea salt and selenium as is advised.
I accept I seem to hold a minority view but if I was only allowed one supplement I would keep the kelp.
There is important research that supports use of iodine - but it seems not everyone has had a positive experience so I suspect that why cautious use of advised.
Levo T4 is all very well if you can convert and establish sufficient T3 - I hope that my next tests this week will show that the various supplements have really upped the T3 conversion naturally - fingers crossed.
