I have been on hypothyroidism since my mid 20's I am now 46. Last year I was diagnosed with mild Barretts and medicated on a proton pump acid medication. My weight started to increase rapidly. However, my stress at work has gone down and I am not excersising as much etc etc. I read somewhere that proton pump acid medication can interfer with levo. Anyone had experience of this as I have changed my acid medication. I am also on hypertension medication lisiniprol and wondered what anyone knows about that. finally...I am sick of being overweight, what are the best diets you guys have been on.
I am a man with autoimune disease, which unusualy I inherited from my parents, if that makes a difference.

I have just embarked on the diet recommended on the Diabetes UK website. I've never been on a diet before but this one is low carb, high fat diet and then introduce some small amount of unrefined carbs like sweet potato after a number of weeks. I'm finding it quite pleasant as my body is really liking it and it's not difficult to stick to as I can eat vegetables, meat and fruit as well as using olive oil, all of which I like.
Sounds as if you're under-medicated. You need to get a copy of your last blood test results. If you live in the UK, it is your legal right to have a copy. Just post them on here, with the ranges, and we'll be better able to help you. Weight-loss diets are not recommended if your thyroid levels are not optimised.
I am not medically qualified but wonder if the proton pump acid medication is correct. i.e. it is used for high acid (so I believe), whereas if hypothyroid we usually have low acid and have to add 'acid' during meals in order to dissolve food.
Many doctors do not know that high acid and low acid symptoms are practically identical and they are unaware that, if hypo, our probability is that we have low acid.
You need a new blood test for thyroid hormones. It should be the very earliest, fasting (you can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between your last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards.
Ask for TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and thyroid antibodies. B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.
Request a print-out of the results with the ranges and post on a new question. FT4 and FT3 may not be done but you can get a private test from one of our recommended labs. Pin-prick home tests.
PPI's are bad for us, lower our already low acid in the stomach so we don't break our food down properly and get the proper nutritional benefit from it. So it also means we aren't getting the same from our thyroid meds as well. Hence putting on weight as we become more hypo.
Yes, your proton pump inhibitors will affect your absorption of thyroid hormone meds. As you might expect, given how we have to take them on an empty stomach and wait an hour before and after. See this on PPIs: jwatch.org/na36643/2014/12/...
