PHYSICIAN'S LIE
Welcome to the forum, Wulliepatrc619.
The Data Protection Act entitles patients to a copy of their medical records but it will cost £50 to obtain your full GP medical history, and £50 per hospital, dentist and other health provider.

Hi, this was not my understanding of medical record disclosure.we are entitled to request sight of medical records free since 1991. It is advisable to request in writing, as the guidelines were to have time set as by a medical person to explain medical terms etc.however, this applies to computer records. The old Lloyd George folders can be at the doctors discretion, made available. Depends on whether they they think certain data may not be good for you (or what they don't want you to know!!!!!). Yes some GPS will want to charge, but again, it s up to them.as surgeries run as businesses these days ,your guess is probably like mine. They will and it's extortion!!! It's not the old system of your doc gets to know the real you and symptoms any more.no consistency either. They all can have up to 3500 patients per partner now. Some may just charge for the cost of photocopying. That is what was set down by the government as guidelines.
Hope any readers can get the gist of my posting. Thanks everyone who read, liked, and answered my previous ones. Update , saw a partner last Thurs, female , who listened, examined, and ordered lots of blood test. Gave me stuff for mouth, vaginal ,skin dryness. Does anyone also have dry nasel problems.only realised two days ago that no secretion there either. Just put me out of my misery! Sorry folks. Xx
Discovered lip balm works in nasal cavity, used very good by makers of great cosmetics specially mascara. Begins with M and ends in Line ☺
Elizabethanera,
Patients are entitled to request sight of their medical records without charge but if they want a photocopy of their electronic summary record practices are entitled to charge £10 or £50 for their manual and electronic summary records. If he practice withholds records which they consider may be deleterious to the patient's well being that can be challenged.
Hi, yes the guideline now say doctors can charge a fee, but it's up to them!!!! Some don't. Like I said, its all business and money first. I know by experience working experience with doctors , and administration of the Family Practice Commitee and Family Health Services Authority. The name changes every so often. Regards
it does cost £50 for G.P records but if you are still attending a hospital if you attend a appointment you're file gets updated an within 6 months of that update they can't charge you, I have done this only then do you find out the lies most of these people who work for the government tell you doesn't help us but they will be going to spend eternity in eternal damnation
Don't get me started!!
Me neither cg. Fed-up being fobbed off for the past 6.5years now.
j_bee - would you like a laugh? I've been dealing with the Ombudsman, one of the GP's I've complained about has maintained that I was not hypothyroid. The Consultant Endocrinologist stated that I was hypothyroid.
I've now asked the Ombudsman whether they feel that the Consultant Endocrinologist who's a specialist in the endocrine system that includes the thyroid, has misdiagnosed me. I've also asked them why I'm taking thyroid medication.
You couldn't make it up!!
Hidden if you didn't laugh, you would cry. It makes you really worried about the whole medical profession. I use 'profession' in the loosest sense of the word.
I agree j_bee although I have a sense of humour failure when it involves the NHS. Agree we should all be worried and I personally do everything I can to encourage people to do their own research before accepting any diagnosis.
Yep I know.beggars belief doesn't it.i could write a book too.☺
Hi good for you going to the ombudsman.did you get anywhere with your health authority complaints department?yes I know how long it can all take.hang in there girl.☺
Gone are the days when if you mentioned going to the FPC for advice, and they would suddenly listen and take you seriously. Trouble was we were brought up in awe of doctors. .x
@elizabethanera - health authority complaints dept? Do you mean the Clinical Commissioning Group that consist of GPs amongst others?
The surgery got themselves all lawyered up, all GPs involved repeatedly lied to hide their mistakes. What other profession has no accountability?
Mind you the Care Quality Commission can be useful, in my experience.
The PHSO defend the NHS at all costs, take a read of this:
That is probably what is called now..also dentists, opticians. Supposed to helping patients.only time I saw anyone get anywhere was 2 docs fell out and one got all the blame. Gee whizz docs not like ombudsman involved atall. They like load of sheep.
You may mean the General Medical Council who are the Regulator of doctors, dentists etc. What patients don't realise is that doctors have to pay an annual fee so the GMC are effectively a mafioso by running a protection racket.
Funny how the GMC did nowt when contacted with concerns by relatives of Harold Shipman's victims.
No , not GMC. I worked for FPC who became Family Health Services Authority, who then changed the at least 3 times to my knowledge..it's your local gp,dentist, opt workshop, meetings, salary for them, etc.The gov condensed several counties together 1994, made lot of staff redundant, leaving the remainder grossly understaffed.not top brass though!!!!!!
Ah I see, thanks for explaining!
Never knew that bout Harold Shipman case.hiw awful.x
At the HS enquiry the GMC were reprimanded by the Chair 'for behaving like a gentlemen's club'.
Like house of parliament and house of lords!!!! We are like minded I think☺
Hidden I e-mailed Mid-Essex CCG last Monday and as yet have not heard from them. Like you, I think more of the Care Quality Commission.
nightingale-56 that surely should spark their interest one would hope? Good to hear of another positive experience with the CQC. Did you know that the Patients Association have some Pharma 'sponsors' ?
Hidden Oh no! That can't be good. wulliepatrc619 Sorry to have hi-jacked your post, but hope you have learn't a bit from our experience of different government bodies.
Hi. No I didn't..how would I look it up? Please☺
What is a SAR wulliepatrc619 ?
In the UK, you can have access to your medical records in many different ways, including complete access under the data protection act or ( on my experience ) rather more limited access under patient access online.
It can be useful I agree. It doesn't always follow that the doctors in question have lied; ironically, given that they rely on science instead of listening to their patients, their letters and notes concerning our health are often vague and may sometimes seem to have a hidden agenda. In the UK treatment of thyroid issues is all too often hamstrung by the over reliance on TSH levels and a cohort of thyroid 'experts' who see levothyroxine as a panacea.
Taking our health into our own hands is a last resort and is no guarantee of wellness, I'm afraid.
SAR = Subject Access Request
An SAR is a request which has legal weight by a person (the subject) to an organisation asking for copies of data that is held on them. So in the context of medical records it is a document (usually a letter) the patient writes to the doctor or hospital or dentist or whatever saying they want copies of their medical records under the Data Protection Act 1998. (I hope that is the right year!) It isn't free. The cost depends on what is asked for.
Unfortunately for them, any doctors who don't want you to know about accessing your records are being under-mined by the NHS' own website:
nhs.uk/chq/pages/1309.aspx?...
That page (and previous versions) has been there for quite a few years.
In my experience, sometimes, doctors 'lie by omission'. I once asked to see the notes my doctor had made about the previous two consultations I'd had with him, because I wanted to remind myself of something he had suggested I try. It was a spur of the moment question, so no time for anyone to erase anything or re-write. The receptionist told me there were no notes, only details of a prescription issued. She showed me the screen to prove it. I was quite taken aback as I had assumed there would at least be a few words about my reason for seeing the doctor, but no, there was nothing.
Hi, I agree, it seems they are careful what actually state these days.they will have realised long ago that patients accessing record ,may take offence at some of their comments. They must have a system whereby they can put data in a side space and only they can access it.specially written computer programming?
Aha just remembered prescription would be on a separate page on your file. Standardised computer programming package in uk !!! Sure all surgeries took them.they can't have their own unless they are private doctors. How sly!!!
Following an operation that went badly wrong, I applied for my medical notes and paid £50. After a few weeks I received 14 pages, mostly smear test results and the time I was in hospital for Quinsy., nothing on the operation! I asked again and again, and had a few more pages, oddly not the same ones. It took a solicitor nearly two years to actually get the notes and by then I was running out of time for any legal stuff!. There were pages missing in the final file....
This is very disturbing, but I'm not really surprised. My own experience is that, once upon a time, doctors could get away with insulting or denigrating me in my record, but after I started accessing it, I found they began to lie by omission.
I hope you eventually recovered from your ordeal.
I read somewhere that a patient complained and a Dr put something on their records, an official mark/code that represents something bad, a warning to other Dr's. The patient only found out later on. Anyhow the patient was kicked off the books and couldnt find a new Dr in their area due to the code on their records. They had to commute to the next town for a Dr.
Did you know a gp can remove you from there list without telling you? Sometimes a pretty printed letter is sent , but not from doc.sent at docs request by local health authority, , who get all the blame. Dis gusting !
Pre printed letter, gives you 7days to re register,if no one will take you, you can ask to allocated a doctor in your area.
I've been threatened with being dropped from the list several times. (I've raised concerns, made objections to breaches of confidentiality and inappropriate or missing treatment, etc.) I was also warned I could be dropped without any warning. Where I live, that would mean a journey of 15-20 miles to the next nearest GP practice, depending on whether I visited a branch surgery or a main one.
Hillwoman that's pretty extreme and presumably none of your complaints were upheld?
My complaints were never dealt with. I live in a remote area where there is just one GP practice, though it has several branches. They behave as they please. I remember telling someone else on the forum recently (can't remember who just atm) that the former Primary Care Trust were well aware of problems at the practice, but relayed an unofficial message through PALS that they couldn't rock the boat. The reason: they hadn't a clue how to provide alternative GP care to a large rural area where the only practice was under investigation.
Shocking Hillwoman and that should not be a reason for not doing anything.
Well, I agree with you, but time after time inertia wins over action.
Hi, just to say hope you sleep ok.am thinking of you.☺
Thank you, you too!
Hi, how are you today? Hope you slept well.you take care. It's so nice to have these little chats. Hope everything not too bad. That goes for all folk who are on this blog too.☺
I'm not too bad today, thanks. The cat got me up several times, but she's old, she can't help it.
Take good care.
You have a cat, we have two. Jake is almost 17 and princess is5.glad you not too bad. Is that a goodish day for you? . I not too bad. Jus tingling and feet very cold and feel springy. Like Zebedee.lol. x
How dreadful! Got you over a barrel and boy do they know it.heaven help all the patients.
Must be like a money machine, that practice. Gobsmacked!😥😥
These doctors who have branch surgeries, how can they be at another venue ,cos in my book , if they are not in my surgery, they are not giving us 24 hour cover,as they ate supposed to do. And the message before you get through on phone,. If you are having breathing difficulties, dial 999. Yeah rite!
Breach of confidentiality is really disturbing.how you coped I don't know.absolutely jaw dropping. I know it happens. Data protection humbug. Dr s oath humbug. I am fuming for you.
I'm not sure how I got through it either, but the main culprits eventually retired, though they still live nearby. It's a small rural community where you can't hide from local gossip.
How galling they live nearby. As you live in a rural area it must be a constant reminder.dont know how they can live with themselves. Doctors are supposed to at least try to heal.all they seem to do is moan bout how much paperwork they have and too many patients going to surgery. My dad used to say a gp was the lowest doctor. He too worked for the health board for 40 odd years and closely with doctors who he respected, and who became close friends.xxxxxxx thinking of you☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Oh dear God! That's disgusting. You are begin sort of blackmailed sweetheart, I d tell em to stuff it and go elsewhere.i know it may be harder to get to, but how dare they treat you like nonentity. A new doctor may be new approach you need.cannot believe they have the audacity to actually threaten you with it. Sorry☺
Have a good think before you decide what to do. Obviously, you have no trust or faith in current gp. Why should you be made to feel awkward. Actually if you have relatives who you go and stay with, outside of your local area, you go see gp there,as a temporary resident. Simple form , just confirm you are staying there up to 15 days, or staying over. I think you can be a T/R for up to 3 months maybe longer.think 6 months may be like limit at any one time. Xx
I used to do that, with useful results, but I'm currently housebound and no longer have access to accommodation in another area. For other people, who could find a way of being a T/R, I would say it's an excellent option.
Oh no! Me too.to go to Hosp doctor and now optician is awful. Get the shakes, fuzzy tingling sensation, perspiration flows, nausea ,swollen everything. Nightmare. Can't wear make any more. One doctor said" a little of make up wouldn't do amiss"many years ago. I made the mistake of always presenting neat, tidy and made up. Now I can't. Think we all have this pride to look "nice" when maybe we not do ourselves any flavours. After all why would a doc think you are ill if you hide every thing. Only last few trips have just had shower and clean clothes, with some semblance of tidy hair. Valid point?
