Hi all,

I'm recently diagnosed hypothyroid and after starting 50mg levothyroxine last week I was beginning to feel like I had more energy. But today, man I feel like I've been hit by a bus. Ache all over, am cold, I don't want to do anything other than sit under a blanket! Is this normal? To have better days and then bad one again?

Hi angel_annie07 It's early days, it takes a few weeks for levo to properly kick in and for you to feel any better. It's also a very low dose and you'll need re-testing in 6-8 weeks and an increase in your dose, then another test and possibly another increase. Hang on in there, you'll hopefully get there in the end, it just needs patience :)

Do you have your test results? If not, ask for them at the surgery and ask every time you have a test. Get the test name, numbers and reference ranges, make a new thread and members can help.

Also, see if you can get thruoid antibodies tested to rule out (or in) autoimmune thyroid disease. And Vit D, B12, ferritin and folate - any deficiencies in these mean that your thyroid hormone can't work properly, they all need to be optimal, so again if you get them tested then post results with ranges for members to help.

Sometimes that small starting dose shuts down your own production of hormone, so you may feel worse before you feel better. If you're tested regularly (every 6-8wks until you stabilise) you should get over this part when your dose is raised. What you don't want is to be left on 50mcg for months or years, unless of course that is seen to be the appropriate therapeutic dose to restore your health.

You didn't get ill overnight and you may not get well overnight, but if they treat you in a timely fashion and you're on enough meds to help you, you should begin to feel better before long. :-)
