Overactive thyroid

Hello I've been recently told that I have an overactive thyroid, but have been told it's not that much over. Can you still get a lot off the symtoms like racing heart, fuzzy head etc if you are only slightly over?? Thanks

Hi barneymc11

I am hypothyroid so a member who is hyper will respond.

Always get a copy of your blood test results, with the ranges, for your own records and so that you can post if you have a query. The ranges are important as labs differ in their machines and it helps members to respond.

If you are able to get a copy of your most rececent blood test results (we are entitled to them) and post. Some surgeries ask for a nominal sum for paper/ink.

I have Graves Disease which is hyper but I was terribly overactive. I did get palpitations again when I was taking a large amount of carbimazole for a long time without being monitored so although I was under active at that point I started getting palpitations again.

Are you taking any anti thyroid medicines at the moment? You need to find out what your blood test results are along with the lab ranges, that's really the only way you will be able to tell 'how much over' you are. You are entitled to have a copy of them for your own records. Once you have them you can post them and see what people think.

If you haven't had them tested already you should ask to have your vitamin B12, vitamin D, ferritin and folates checked out too - you want them to be well up in their ranges.

My sister had this problem and somehow they treated it without zapping her thyroid to death. Make sure you have a very good doctor who takes this seriously. If your symptoms are mild try exercising and maybe yoga and breathing to calm down--if these symptoms do not get better you must get your thyroid checked often to make sure it is not getting worse. Not to make you panic, but an overactive thyroid can become serious causing heart attacks, etc. You are probably losing weight and feeling speedy which can be nice for a while but keep a very close watch on your symptoms!
