Low T3 can raise CK levels. So can taking statins.

From wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creat...

"There is an inverse relationship in the serum levels of T3 and CK in thyroid disease. In hypothyroid patients, with decrease in serum T3 there is a significant increase in CK. Therefore, the estimation of serum CK is considered valuable in screening for hypothyroid patients."

So, the lower your T3, the higher your CK will be.

If you are taking statins you might want to read Dr Malcolm Kendrick's blog :

He is very against statins. He has written a very good book called "The Great Cholesterol Con" which I would thoroughly recommend.

If you have high cholesterol, then correct treatment of hypothyroidism will (probably) lower your cholesterol without any other medication.

Regarding muscle pain, for many people with thyroid problems low vitamin D is a problem, and supplementation at a high enough level usually (but not always) makes people feel a whole lot better. If you haven't had your nutritional status checked, then ask your doctor to test your iron, ferritin, vitamin D, folate and vitamin B12. Ask for copies of your results including the reference ranges. Then post them on this site. There is a difference between having results in the reference range and having results in the optimal range. Doctors don't care about levels being optimal. But for people with thyroid problems it can make the difference between feeling awful and feeling well.

Blimey, I've never heard of CK. Another reason that FT3 should be tested then. Nice post Humanbean.

Hi I also have had severe muscle pain alongside my hashimotos hypothyroidism and an increased CK level. When I had the worst joint and muscle pain I was found to be having a hashis swing & had actually gone really hyper (tsh 0.01) I slightly reduced my Armour dose and have found that together with supplementing with Vitamin D, turmeric (anti-inflammatory) and taking selenium (for the hashimotos) I have reduced the Ck level and increased my t3. Although my muscles still ache it is far better than it was.

MOMMADONO, have you had a good look at the main TUK website? There is SO much information, and I am sure that many of your basic questions will be answered there.

In particular the section "About the Thyroid" is very helpful. For someone who is newly diagnosed the information there is a real eye-opener because most people who are well have no idea what the thyroid is doing!

CK = creatine kinase.

Please note : creatine and creatinine are NOT the same thing.
