Have had thoughts on others with depression before, after having that awful brain fog myself and telling Doc I felt too happy to be depressed, but think if I wasn't lucky enough for Doc to up my Levo it could have lead to a deeper type of depression maybe ?

They said there was a link between Thyroids connecting with Autism and Bipolar, now after reading that piece Clutter I can understand how the Bi polar might be coming about, it makes sense.

:O Those poor people having electric shock treatment just because they were depressed or Bi Polar, only to find out years later it was actually Hypothyroidism, so many wasted years of their lives and the knock on effect of their poor families too. :(

Thanks Clutter. :)

All because no-one would test Thyroid function prior to issuing anti-psychotics and ECT. It's a damn disgrace!

It's hardly surprising that people with undiagnosed and undermedicated thyroid disease become depressed when they feel ill and exhausted all the time.

In my utopian GP practice they would be prescribed vitamin & mineral supplements and a trial of thyroxine prior to being diagnosed depressed, although it should be borne in mind that it is quite feasible that someone with low thyroid function can also be suffering anxiety/depression unrelated to thyroid disease.

By now Medics should be connecting it all up. How come we can, but they can't ?

Leverette, it was a collection of articles curated in Thyroid News but are no longer available. The Hypothyroidism Masquerading as Psychiatric Illness article is probably still available on hypothyroidmom.com

Thanks Clutter!

My friend's sister & husband think she's bipolar. She's hypo, but won't take her levo due to side effects. Hopefully reading something like that might get her to try a different medication.

Leverette, Your friend probably isn't bipolar, it's certainly not something which can be diagnosed by family and relatives. Mood swings and depression are common when hypothyroidism is undertreated and should improve when she is optimally treated. If your friend won't take Levothyroxine suggest she tries T3 or NDT which can be bought online without prescription.

I had dreadful side effects on Levothyroxine only but have been well on Levothyroxine plus T3 for a couple of years. T3 calmed the adverse effects Levothyroxine caused as well as raising FT3.

Her behaviour is very erratic, more in line with BPD, but very likely due to hypothyroidism. It took 7 months to get her to visit her GP, but she only took levothyroxin for about week before giving up.

From what I've read on here, I'm very glad I went straight to NDT, but probably would've given up had I taken Thyrogold first!

Leverette, A week's not much time to try Levothyroxine and adverse effects may not have lasted much longer than a week. Sounds like she needs to see her GP but Levothyroxine is all that's likely to be prescribed unless she self medicates T3 or NDT.
