Self medication.

Hi,

Does anyone on this forum know of a good quality supplier of Levo please ? I need to be able to purchase it without a prescription. I'm seeing my GP next week, I'm going to plead with her to up my meds, but I'm not optimistic ! My bloods are 'normal' or in the ' middle ' according to her, but I'm still very tired, can't shift weight and can't go to the loo very well. I feel I need to be in the upper area of my range, I'm on 100 mcg Levo and I think I need to be about 120.mcg. She doesn't want to overmedicate me, I appreciate that, but would at least like to try it. So if no joy, I want to try it myself, then it's my fault if I have problems. I'm just very fed up and frustrated. Grrrrrrr

Thanks in advance. X

Hi,

Forget 'normal' in the 'middle' or anything else. We have to get ourselves well, which you are now trying to do. My first suggestion is:-

If you can possibly get a copy of your latest thyroid gland blood test results, with the ranges, and post them on a new question, members will comment. If you need a new one, also ask for Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

I wonder if your TSH maybe a little high.

My TSH last count was 1.1. Serum free T4 was 13 and serum T3 was 1.4. ? ? ? ? ? ?

Hi, always get a print-out of your blood tests complete with the ranges, as labs differ and it makes it easier to comment. If your GP hasn't done a Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate.

If you email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org and ask for a copy of Dr Toft's article in Pulse Online. Make a copy for your GP highlighting question 6 where he recommends the level to attain plus he also says some T3 can be added. Make a new appointment to discuss the matter fully with your 'normal' or 'middle' doctor.

Ask your GP to trial you on 125mcg for 3 months and tell her you'll cut a tablet in half, reducing your dose to 112.5mcg, if you feel over medicated and experience racing or pounding heart.

I doubt it will help with weight loss other than enabling you to exercise if you aren't so fatigued.

I was put straight onto 200mcg after TT and I only weighed 52kg. It was flipping brutal.

Hi,

I'm going to take your advice and ask to trial 125 mcg. Great idea. It's more a fatigue issue than weight, if I had more go in me then I would do more. I'd love to be thinner but in the scheme of things being healthy and energised is more important. I can live with a bigger arse ! There's so much worse in life than that. Lol. Thanks.

Someone on here answered a lady in a similar situation to you by saying "if your thyroid medication is not working then there has got to be a reason" and maybe your reason isn't that you don't have enough but that your body is unable, for whatever reason, to use the medication you are already taking.

Have you had the five important vitamins tested? and if so what were the results?

Hi moggie

My vits were done and ok. I'm also going to try taking my Levo at night, see if this helps. It's worth a try. Had some great advice from you guys and I appreciate it. Xx

Have you got the results of these - is your ferritin over 70 (preferable nearer 90), your VitD over 75 and your B12 over 600? (of course all the above can vary depending on your lab ranges)

Hi,

Right'

B12 is 448

Folate is 5.0

Sadly this is all I have so I will have to ask for ferritin and the others. GP already thinks I'm a pain but I don't care.

My free T3 is 1.4. I had to fight for this ! Pffft ! Thanks guys your wonderful. Where would I be without you. Xxxxxxxx

Unfortunately those results mean nothing without the ranges to go with them as every lab has different ranges. Have you got those?

I think everyone who takes an interest in the own health are a pain to GP's.lol.

Post your vit results as Moggie said. If they're not 'optimal' you can increase the Levo 'til you rattle but your body won't be able to utilise it.

I agree with the others, but would just like to draw your attention to the possibility, that if you self-medicate the extra that you likely need, then future blood tests will likely show this, and the doctor may reduce what you are already getting if she likes to keep people mid range. So you would then need to buy a larger amount. She'll likely also twig what you are doing eventuallly, although that may take quite a while

Some doctors just dont get the whole making you feel well thing!

I will post my vits shortly. I intend to try and get GP on side before I do anything like self medication, my pal is a pharmacist and will kill me if she knew what I was thinking. It's just I'm tired of the whole falling asleep at two in the afternoon ! I fell asleep in the cinema the other night, must have snored because people were looking at me ! Oops !

Something to consider. Instead of purchasing extra T4, which doesn't appear to be working for you as your FT3 is so low, what about trying adding in some Nutri Thyroid? yournutritionshop.com/produ... This is available as a health supplement and is often recommended by Dr P (I take it). If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading his book "Your thyroid and how to keep it healthy".

Hi Rosetrees.

I have just completed my online purchase of these vits, one larger bottle to start with and I will wait with interest. Hopefully it's £20 well spent. Thanks for advice xxxxxxxxxxxxc
