This was one of my symptoms when my GP reduced my dose of thyroxine. As soon as the dose was increased, the itching stopped. I'm sure there are many other causes of itching though.

I started itching all over and went to the doc. He said I had urticaria and gave me Fexofenadine which eventually worked, thank goodness. Good luck xx

Fexofen a what ?!? What's that for?

It's a strong anti histamine

Only available on prescription to stop the itching.

So it's allergy rather than thyroid, you think?

They didn't know! I also have small fibre

neuropathy and a weird skin disease called lichen Planus. I'm waiting for a scalp biopsy for an unusual condition called dermatitis herpetaphormis which is linked to coeliac disease. In short, I'm falling apart!!!

I initially went to the docs with itching. Felt like creeping over me, diagnosed underactive. Had to start at 50mg levo. Now up to 100mg. Itching is now more like pins and needles but stronger. Last TSH - 9.4, FT4 - 15 so expect to go to 125mg and hopefully the itching will stop. Joint pains are worse then when I was diagnosed. I guess my body is trying to get used to the thyroxin. I did find out that my TSH was at 7 in 2009 but the doctor did not inform me !!!

Hi i suffered with the same symptoms. I saw my G.P. He suggested Oilatum shower gel which can be bought over the counter at the chemist. This helped it a great deal. After that i had an increase of levo and it went away completely.Hope it helps!

I'm itchy ,crawly and feel like I'm getting stabbed with needles. Its all over, but no rash.I am only getting a couple of hours sleep a day.Im about to literally lose my mind.It comes and goes 24 hours a day.My Doctor says blood tests are O.K., I've tried antihistamines ,salves and online suggestions, but nothing's really helping. My doctor says it's common, but they don't know what causes it, and it's rarely treatable.Im scheduled to see an Allergist, but that's about 3 weeks away.I don't know if I can keep going on that long...Does anybody know if they can sedate you or something ? Life was good until this started, but now I'm going to a very dark place.

Hi - I share your pain. I first had the itch 2 years ago for a few months, then it went away, then last year it returned with avengance. I feel like I want to peel my skin off its so awful - and it starts in late afternoon and continues all night, then it eases a little during the day. It's come back again in the last few days. I'm going mad with it, this time its spread from its usual arms and legs to chest and scalp.

However, last year - I found a remedy! I had seen the Dr, who tested my liver - which was ok, and just gave me a huge prescription for antihistamines - which took the edge off a little but didnt really sort it out. I had done an elimination diet, which also had no affect - I even wondered if I was sensitive to ultra violet light since the itch is usually around in 'sunshine' months. So, as a last resort I went to see a homeopath, who when I described my symptoms - instantly recognised that these symptoms are thyroid linked, and had seen other patients on levo with the same symptoms (just like the rest of us on this forum!) she gave me a remedy that I took daily for a week and the ITCH CLEARED. No more itches, until today. I'm waiting to see her to get some more. I cannot tell you the relief I had finally finding a solution, and also a sympathetic ear - I thought I was going mad as you cannot even see any rash or hive like symptoms, i felt tearful that nobody could understand that my skin felt it was crawling with little scratchy little ants. So, I encourage you all to look into the same - It helped me - and is worth a try for the relieft it can give you.

What was the remedy she gave you? You did not say what it was. Thanks.

I am dealing with this sort of itching the past couple of weeks, and I realized today it really only kicks in in the afternoon for some reason, lasting into the evening.
