sezzy, I have the same problem and have tried five different supplements but only the prescription high dose helped a little. I took 15,000 i.u. of vitamin D twice a week and raised my level by 15 points.

Hi It is better to have it on a script, Also have a calcium test first, Corrected calcium must always be in rrange, not over. If it is over you cannot safely take Vit d, I am in this situation although I have osteomalacia. Before my calcium went over range, I had D on a script. I had 3 times the recommended dose to keep the D just OK.

Best wishes,

Jackie

HI Merissa, It is only the corrected calcium that matters, very important. The normal range, most Labs is 2.20- 2.60 Calcium often tested on its own, but can be done sometimes with LFT ( liver function)

Best wishes,

Jackie

Hi Jackie

I see you mention about the importance of calcium with regard to vit D and I am a puzzled. Does calcium increase when vit D is made from sunlight in the same way please? If this is so, why don't we suffer after long sun exposure like this summer?

Many thanks,

Mary

Hi Natural vit D is slightly different and is not thought to effect the calcium., because you would never have a huge amount naturally even in a very hot country Same as it is in some food, not much, mainly eggs. It is just when you are taking D that the corrected calcium is really important High calcium is dangerous in a lot of ways, most people know they generally can cause "stones", called calculli. Also more importantly it is an electrolyte, so with the other electyrolytes is is very important to keep in range. This is for the heart and kidneys. The other main electrolytes are Potassium, Magnesium and Sodium ( salt) which all influence each other. If vit D below range or even in range but low, it is a good thing to take but only with corrected calcium tests and repeats of both , at first after 3 months, then if stable a year or less.I hope that clarifies .

Best wishes,

Jackie

Ha har, Jacki, I questioned this issue myself, it makes me really cross as two years ago, ct scan revealed kidney calcifications and no further action, recently took vitamin d, which caused kidney and bone pain. Hmmmm waiting for responce from my doctor. I question why my vitamin d has gone low again, can you answer this? X

Hi It may be that your calcium has dropped as they do go together. It may be that it can get worse with age!!! Some people do have trouble taking vit D, if you go back on it, you need to start on a very low dose, gradually increase after a 3 month blood test as it takes 3 months to get into the blood.. I know that is my Endo`s policy. Also as it is hormonal there may be a connection to say thyroid being lower?

Thanks Jackie, makes more sense now! I did believe however, that the body can make huge amounts of vit D on a sunny day. My GP doesn't test calcium so I'll have to ask him to do so as I take 2000 IU of vit D a day and have done so for a year.

Mary

P.s. apologies to the original poster for asking questions at a tangent and hope you get sorted soon.

Have you been tested for Coeliac Disease? That is also linked with Thyroid and leads to low Vit D.

Hi a lot of autoimmune diseases can relate to low vit D, in the long term. As hormonal it is very important.
