Hi all my 12 day old daughter has just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Is there any mums or dads in this group who have children with the same condition.

You must be very worried about your new little baby. Thankfully nowadays a test is done very early so I am sure she will get the treatment she deserves. I don't have any knowledge and hopefully someone who has gone through what you are at present will respond.

Best wishes to you both.

I am so sorry, however please focus on the positive: it's been picked up early and because of that you will go out there and educate yourself and be the best mummy out there to look after her.

A 'holistic' approach has to be taken with hypothyroidism, let the doctors take care of her thyroxine for now and you start learning all there is about the importance of a good 'wholesome' diet (ie no sugars/low carbs etc), keeping an eye on those very important vitamins.

If you are breastfeeding you are supposed to take vitamin D yourself so that you can pass some onto your baby, VERY VERY important, look also into vitamins for babies/toddlers .

I can point you in the direction of a facebook group for parents of hypothyroid children, let me know if you are interested and I will send you the details.

Hi nobodysdriving, thanks for the information about the vitamin D and the diet. I'd love to have the information for the Facebook group.

Hi Im interested in the Facebook group for newborns. Ive had Hypothyroidism for the past 45years since I was 15months old. Practitioners have never been helpful in providing info and Ive found most of my info via books and the internet. This condition has had a major impact on my health and I would love to see the impact this condition has had on the lives of their children

Could you point me in the direction of the FB group for parents of hypothyroid children also please? Thank you. It is so difficult to find information for children with Hashimoto's.

I was diagnosed at 9 days old in 1974. Only because a trainee doctor was reading up on it. Thankfully it is included in the heel test now. The baby will be fine, I was on levothyroxine for 37 of last 38 years, and have now taken control of my meds, including b12 etc and ndt. Kids are very closely monitored.

My grandson was diagnosed at only a few days old. The difficulty was getting tablets into him as he would spit them out, but at 3 years old he takes them as part of his daily routine. He is very closely monitored through the hospital with regular blood tests and appointments and his levels are finally stabilising. He does seem to have mood swings which we are not sure is linked to his age or related to his thyroid levels!!! He is on track with everything and has lots of energy. They really do link the importance of taking the correct level of thyroxine as at a young age as it is linked to brain development, but he is doing fine and with so many check ups we are confident he is developing to his correct age level. He does suffer with cold hands and toes which is common, we found putting socks under his babygro sorted this problem while he was young but he was born in the winter. Hope this helps ........

Hi, my gran-daughter was diagnosed at birth, she sees a paediatrician on a regular basis, she's 6 now and doing great. Hashimoto's is rampant in my family, me, my two daughters, my gran-daughter, my mother had it my father had it, my grandma had Grave's disease, my uncle, niece and cousins have it.

I expect that they will run tests to see what's causing it, they're usually very good at treating children these days.

I hope it goes well.
