Is there any way around the hoarseness and voice loss brought on by Hypothyroidism. I struggle with this badly.

Hello in my opinion when in the past I have been badly under medicated my voice sounded very gravely or like l had smoked a packet of fags..(non smoker) ! and my throat very dry and found food hard to swallow..... The whole thing improved when l went onto T3 after a year of sorting out the dose things got sooo much better!

Hope this helps ..bestwishes x

Hi Petrovsky

This has been a big issue for me too. I have hashi's and am currently on 150mcg of Levo. This past 2 weeks has been horrific and have severe pain around my throat and neck with my voice breaking and disappearing.

Some more insight would be good!

Maybe you are still undermedicated. If you can get a print-out of your blood test results complete with the ranges and post on a new question for someone to comment. If you've not had a recent one ask for a new one due to your symptoms.

Hoarseness is a clinical symptom and it should improve when properly medicated. I still get occasional hoarseness but, in the main, it is so much better.

I am starting a medication programme (a few weeks) and will be on 25mcg of Eltroxin for 3 months when my GP wants to test me again. An awful long time to endure this awful symptom.

Petrosky, 25mcg is just a starting dose and usually this dosage is raised after 4/5 weeks and so on at 4/5 week intervals until the optimal dosage is achieved. It really seems your GP does not know how to treat.

Buy Dr Anthony Toft's "Understanding Thyroid Disorders". BMA publication plus Dr Toft past president of BTA., Pp 41-42 describe time intervals of dose increases; P 88

give valuable advice on judging the correct dose of thyroxine.

Thanks Shaws, I had a blood test on Monday as I went to the DR's last week with the pain. The hoarseness doesn't bother me that much, it's more the constant and (increasingly) painful throat and neck :(

They did find cysts and inflammation on my scan last month but my GP on Friday said there is no point scanning again as treatment will be the same.

I don't really get pain but do get very hoarse and find it difficult to speak sometimes especially when I'm really tired and when my dose of levo was too low. It was always much better on a higher dose, and now on ndt, even find myself singing again! (mainly in the car :) ) Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I always thought it was because the thyroid swells as it struggles to produce more and presses on the vocal chords, even if you don't have obvious goiter.

Just wanted to say I was diagnoised in May 2012 after a really bad bout of a hoarse voice. Then since December 2012 I have suffered it again every 6-8 weeks really fed up now as keep getting told its a virus!! white blood count is always raised when blood taken!! Off to the GP again tomorrow as guess what I have it again!!

My daughter 33, suffered from extreme lowering of her voice range and hoarseness from about month 3 of her pregnancy now with little one about 18 months it's a lot better but not right. One health visitor agreed it could be hypo related her GP tried a referral to an endo but the endo refused to see her based on TSH aaagh.

They sent her for speech therapy so she went hoping it would be someone informed who could then override the endo decision only to find it was a dim woman who just said she couldn't see a cause and that my daughter was using the wrong "flaps" : What suddenly just cos she was pregnant when it started.

She is still undiagnosed as too tired to do anything about it - she has seen Dr P a few years ago and he said she was hypo.

TIP Don't accept speech therapy as way to endo!
