I'd suggest it depends on the interpretation of this guidance to doctors:

Apply knowledge and experience to practice

14 You must recognise and work within the limits of your competence.

15 You must provide a good standard of practice and care. If you assess,

diagnose or treat patients, you must:

a adequately assess the patient’s conditions, taking account of their

history (including the symptoms and psychological, spiritual, social

and cultural factors), their views and values; where necessary,

examine the patient

b promptly provide or arrange suitable advice, investigations or

treatment where necessary

c refer a patient to another practitioner when this serves the

patient’s needs.

gmc-uk.org/static/documents...

(My emphasis above.)

If it serves your needs, then he must refer you. How that is decided seems to be explained here:

gmc-uk.org/Delegation_and_r...

But again, that is itself open to interpretation.

Yes, doctors can refuse. You can ask him of course and if he gives a reason like the GMC. you can give a reason why Dr S became involved in helping thyroid patients.

whatdotheyknow.com/request/...

and that at one of these hearings there were over 2,500 testimonials which the GMC nicely bound up in Red Ledgers. How many doctors would have so many testimonials sent in support.

Hi It is common for a GP to refuse a referral to any other doctor. In practice most will to an Endo, privately or NHS and then give any drugs on a script and do the tests requested, if say a private endo., I doubt you would have a problem as all have worked NHS as consultant endo`s and usually still do , a few retired but continue their private practice.

I hop that gives a clearer picture.

Best wishes

, Jackie

with regard to helvella's comment above.....item C as I have been insisting for sooooo long please ask ' if your gp is not a specialist in this particular field ---whatever your particular problem---YOU HAVE A RIGHT under their own rules TO INSIST ON A REFERAL TO A SPECIALIST IN THAT FIELD ' always remember that ALL gp's are not specialists in all conditions-------this is not only a problem fro thyroid conditions =====BUT FOR ALL HEALTH PROBLEMS====which has far more reaching repercushing cercumstances=====for everyone at some time or other........if after your referral you are not happy YOU can insist on a referral to a trust of your own choice under the choose and book system [ you need to carry out your own research for the best ] for a second specialist.......just quote the details as set out above.......LOL ....alan

I think it is your GP should refer you. Or louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org has a list of NHS/private doctors who are sympathetic, if you emal her there may be one near you.

in reply to shaws

I'm in a similar position. I want a referral to Dr S but my GP wont play.

Dr S only takes referrals from NHS GPs now (I believe).

I went to NHS Prof A who went down the standard route and told me 5 misleading statements, so I'm complaining about him.

I plan on telling my GP that after 18 months of her care, I have no diagnosis and no treatment plan, I have no trust in Prof A because of the misleading statements and my faith in her ability to adequately diagnose and treat me has been eroded (need more thought here, cos she can then delist me for breakdown of trust).

I will remind her of Dr S's last FTP hearing where he was completely exonerated.

I will show the evidence of my comaplint about an Endo who told my GP that they had had probems with Dr S but could not provide me with any evidence to back this statement up.

I will tell her that Dr S's work is supervised by a consultant GP as per his license conditions

and that at his last review the GMC (or MPTS) were happy with his work.

I will tell my GP that contrary to what Endos may say the GMC have no evidence of risks to patient safety from Dr S's work.

I will tell her that she has no logical reason NOT to refer me.

Then as Helvella pointed out, I will tell her that because of the time I have been under her care and Prof A's lies, it has to be in my best interests to refer me to a Dr who can get me better i.e. Dr S..
