Hi. Is anyone here vegetarian and an 'i.b.s' sufferer? How do you get protein into your diet?

Yes I am, I have had IBS as long as I can rememeber and been veggie most my life, I struggle with lentils but love them. i would go Vegan were it not for the fact I struggle to digest pulses and lentils. I hate meat though and just could never eat it.

Hello there,

I have been a vegan for nearly 20 years and suffered with IBS for at least the last 10, I have not had any problems getting essential vitamins minerals and protein, I also have a bit of a problem with pulses (though love them) I find red lentils the easiest to digest followed by skinned chick peas, but essentially I get the bulk of my protein from nuts and seeds I keep bags of sunflower, pumkin, sesame etc and toast them in a little sea salt and a teaspoon of olive oil they make a tasty nutrious snack (this can be done quickly in a cup or small microwavable pot, microwave them for a couple of minutes or so and shake halfway through, I grab a handful of nuts a couple of times a day keeping again a variety of them in my cupboard, they can be added to soups, stir frys even crushed and added to home made veggie burgers, tossed into rice puddings etc. Becoming a vegan is a challenging adjustment but that is all, there are so many alternatives to cows milk and cheese out there in the shops and online that are usually soya or pea based that contain reasonable levels of protein themselves and are quite tasty once you adjust your taste to them though keep the amount of soya down if you suffer with IBS as it can be hard to digest, try oat, rice or almond milk instead.

Anyhow good luck with it all.

Hi! I'm not vegetarian however I have been on the FODMAPS diet for IBS since September after my GP referred me to a dietician. One of the food groups that should be avoided is legumes which means all beans, lentils etc including chickpeas. Vegetables that should be avoided are the brassica family - cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts. Some fruits also have to be avoided like apples and pears. Hope this is helpful. You'll be able to get the full list if you google FODMAPS. I found the diet very helpful!
