I’m curious to ask a question to as wide of an audience as possible, especially those experiencing any bowel/digestion/gastro issues…
Are you unable to burp? I’ve potentially recently come to light that this may be a potential cause of a range of issues but is not yet widely recognised in the UK.

To reference a previous post of mine outlining a pretty severe range of symptoms I’ve been experiencing, the fact I can’t burp may very likely be the cause issue! healthunlocked.com/theibsne...
This may go against all the advise for IBS but have you tried fizzy drinks. I feel awful most days but have fairly recently discovered if I have a small amount of coke ie 125ml, I can bring up air that seems to be sitting in my belly. I never used to drink fizzy drinks but I find them quite useful now. I buy the bottles rather than the cans, somehow they seem better and I can put the top back on and put it in the fridge for later if I need it again! It seems better if it's cold! Don't gulp it down just drink it slowly. I drink it straight from the bottle!
Hi Maureen, I have - but I generally stay clear from them because they really don’t help me. And I experience the issues on what seems to be quite a random basis! One way or another…I can’t burp!
Can I ask r u IBS D or IBS C I have suffered with IBS D for years and always been able to burp and pass wind ok but recently I am going between D And C but I have noticed when I am constapated I cannot burp or pass wind I feel like I want to but nothing comes out and I feel so bloated and get loads of cramping
When I have this problem I put a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a large glass, fill to halfway with water & then add about a teaspoon of bicarb. Best to do this over the sink as it fizzes up. Works for me most of the time.
Do you know if you have a high or low stomach acid? Stomach acid is connected to a lot of digestive issues.
You can test to see if your stomach acid is too high or too low.
First thing one morning, on an empty stomach, before eating, drinking, brushing teeth
Add 1/8 tsp bicarbonate of soda to 100mls slightly warm water
Drink the mixture (it may taste slightly salty)
Time for a burp!!!
Don’t expect a big belch, it’s gonna feel like little air bubbles coming up from your stomach. You are causing a reaction with the alkalinity of the bicarb with the acidity in your stomach.
Optimal burp time 1-2mins
If you burp before 1 mins your stomach acid is too high and we need to calm digestive fire
If you burp between 2-3mins you have slightly low levels of stomach acid
If you burp between 3-5 mins your stomach acid is low
Anything after 5 mins and you have super low or no stomach acid
You can then interpret the results, perhaps change diet, look at the medicines you’re taking, consult a gp for further investigations?
