Low backache

I`m in a really bad phase with my IBS at the moment - probably because of stress because my elderly father is very poorly. I`m also getting a lot of low backache which I don`t remember being a problem before. I`m just wondering if this is common?

Hi, like you my symptoms are worse when I am under more stress than usual. Yes I get lower back pain when symptoms are worse,it is a typical symptom for me. I take ipobrufen x2 tablets and drink more clear fluids.

I was recently diagnosed with IBS at 71 years old; and when I get an attack, it runs from my left side around the lower back - the back pain is very severe with gas - when the attack eases off, the back pain goes away. I too live a stressful existence. My IBS does not include constipation or diarrhea just gas pains - doctor said this is still called IBS.

I used to get really bad low backache with my IBS, so bad that I would have to strap a hot water bottle to my middle to walk about with. I was told it was referred pain which apparently you can get anywhere particularly back, chest and shoulders - all caused by the IBS.

Mine stopped being in my back when my menopause happened but now I feel it in my ribs instead! Heat always helps and now you can get stick on heat patches, so much easier than a hot water bottle!

Who knows why the body targets certain places? If you're worried, best see the doctor to confirm it as you may have pulled a muscle or strained a disc.

Best wishes to you and your poor father. It's so stressful when our parents get elderly...it does those of us with IBS no favours!

Hi yes this is because of stress and muscles BUt please do get it seen by GP.

Thanks everyone. I can`t face going to my GP at the moment - have spent too much time in hospitals etc lately. I did see the consultant last week and I have got a sigmoidoscopy booked for next month. Sadly there is no hope of my father improving so I have to try to find a way of coping with the stress better.
