Spasmonal Forte

I have tried mebeverine without success and was wondering if anyone has been prescribed Spasmonal Forte for IBS.

I too was on Mebeverine and found them useless. Have now been prescribed Spasmonal and find them better but not perfect.

They take edge off the pain but only if i take the maximum dose.

Personally, i have found buscopan to be far better but i have to buy it myself.

My doctor only knows two treatments, the mebeverine and the spasmonal, if neither work then tough luck is their attitude.

I was recently diagnosed with ibs but have found mebeverine, buscopan and fybogel useless. What is spasmonal as my doctor has never mentioned them?

I have tried regular Spasmonol, which I bought online. Apparently the Forte version is just double strength. I tried taking two at a time but it didn't give me any relief. I can't say I noticed any difference with any kind of antispasmodic apart from Dicycloverine - even then I wasn't sure. I found Dicycloverine by googling. When I mentioned it to my doctor, he said he had never heard of it but guessed it was the same as either Mebeverine (Colofac) or hyoscine butylbromide (Buscopan) - he looked it up in his book and said that it was neither so worth a try. I used a box and them had one repeat but didn't bother getting any more. Bunnyrabbit, I'm surprised your doctor won't give you Buscopan as I thought they worked on a 'cascade system' whereby they have to prescribe particular drugs before trying alternatives - I also thought that Buscopan was at the top of that list. My doctor had never heard of Spasmonol. Originally I was prescribed Buscopan and later Fybogel Mebeverine (which tastes really bitter due to the Mebeverine)

The only thing I have found that helps is Codeine - but I am aware of the addiction issues etc so only take it on really bad days or if I really have to be somewhere. It usually has a knock-on effect of backing me up the following day.

I guess we are all different so anything is worth a try.

I have found Mebeverine no good at all and take Spasmonal which I find much better. I have IBSC and now have two Sennakot once a week. This clears me out and doesn't allow anything to build up, so when I do get an attack it isn't as bad as it might have been.

I'm surprised to hear of a doctor who hasn't heard of Spasmonal and who won't subscribe Buscopan.

My g.p wont prescribe anything if they can get away with it. I was told there were no alternatives to mebeverine or spasmonal and only found Buscopan by chance when i saw it in the chemist.

I couldnt even get fybogel on prescription, had to buy it myself on ebay.

I'm on a daily routine of one spasmonal at breakfast, 1 loperamide and 1 spasmonal at lunch and 1 loperamide and 1 buscopan at tea. This works really well. I've been on this concoction for five years and all are on repeat prescription from my doc. They all work better if taken consistently rather than just when needed

You would expect all doctors to work the same, but my doctor told me he wasn't allowed to prescribe 2 types of antispasmodic at the same time.

Get a new doctor. Mine meds are reviewed every year and they've never changed it

I agree (get a new dr Bunnyrabbit1) your doctor can prescribe buscopan on prescription, mine does.

MarkBrennan - I think your Dr right about not prescribing 2 antispasmodics at once - an over dose of one can cause big problems with gut functioning so you best just sticking to one that you find works but don't be tempted to take extra on a bad day.

notahappy1 - sorry not come across Spasmonal Forte, buscopan works most of the time for me so just sticking with that and learning to watch my diet+++ it has the biggest impact on my gut but it does get very dull sometimes.

I have just started on alvarine (spasmonal) to see how this works for me as I have been on buscopan, mebeverine and dicycloverine which worked for a few months and then just stopped working or never helped at all, and had to stop using them for long periods of time. seems to be working so far but time will tell.

I have tried peppermint oil capsules, fybogel mebeverine (which I am allergic to as it is orange), buscopan and now on spasmonal which seem to work but have only been on tyem for a few weeks. But none of the others has seemed to work.

Hi, just read your post, I was also put on meberviene without success, I now take spasmonal (sp60) 3 times a day during an attack and my god it really does help! my attacks generally consist of massive bloating (look preggo) and as like this morning (but not always) really bad cramp attacks. It worked for me, I hope it did/does for you
