Have you asked for an explanation from the hospital? They might be willing to sit down with you and go through it with you.

You could request copies of medical records and pay an expert to review them, but that would cost money.

Yes, this seems a good way forward. I believe the hospital's bereavement team or PALS department should be able to help.
