What are the consequences of vagotomy, cutting the vagus nerve?

Notably, constipation has been shown to increase the risk of developing PD and in contrast, truncal vagotomy seems to decrease the risk of PD.

While many patients with a history of vagotomy, gastric resection or atrophic gastritis have been shown to have iron deficiency anemia, a cohort of patients with ZES who received treatment with PPIs for over 10 years did not demonstrate clinically significant iron deficiency [Stewart et al. 1998].

Vagotomy reduces intrinsic factor secretion, which impairs vitamin B12 absorption. Vitamin B12 deficiency - if untreated - results in nerve damage, dementia, and death.

Any abdominal surgery, ileocecal resection, vagotomy or IgA-deficiency did not have any influence, and a history of appendectomy decreased the risk of SIBO. Multivariate analysis revealed gastric surgery, stenoses, medical immunosuppression and levothyroxine to be the strongest predictors.

I am also interested to hear from anyone who, like me, have had a vagotomy and later developed AF with accompanying "gastric disturbances".

He is on maximum dose of Domperidone, has had Botox injections to the pyloric valve which actually made things worse and his surgeon has mentioned both pyloroplasty and vagotomy as options although neither he nor Nielsen is keen on it as there is no guarantee of success and once done irreversible.
