Since dutasteride is an inhibitor of all three 5a-reductase isoforms, it appears to be an effective suppressor of DHT which is a considerably more potent androgen than the testosterone it is derived from. I also continued Lupron and Avodart. I also have vision/eye issues including Macular Degeneration and I have regular eye injections, and less not forget heart problems.

My husband was diagnosed in 2011, gleason 8, psa 22, many years of treatment, IMRT, zytiga, Lupron/Avodart. Treated with Dr. Snuffy Myers until his retirement. Psa has never been to 0. All scans stable, cancer in lymph nodes, no bone involvement.

There are many on this forum that take Avodart to reduce DHT levels. I perused the NCCN Guidelines Version 1.2020 - Prostate Cancer and searched Pubmed but did not find any guidance or reports that would support using an 5 alpha reductase inhibitor.

At that point, I started to use Avodart to inhibit 5alpha-reductase.

I had a talk with my MO about Avodart, and he doesn't have a problem with me taking it, and I will start doing this shortly. He is not too keen on IADt( The reason I want to start Avodart) because of my high Gleason score(9), but is willing to consider it at a later stage in my treatment.

If Avodart works for me that won't happen anyway (hopefully). Recently I see evidence that high testosterone treatments are being suggested but this is completely opposite to conventional treatment, should I dismiss this immediately?

Should I get Doxycycline and Avodart prescripts from a med oncologist or dermatologist, if my intended benefits are to slow the prostate cancer growth?

Currently I am on Lupron + Avodart + Zytiga + Prednisone + Metformin, Anyone here on this forum familiar with Lamotrigine? It's usually used for seizures. I have been tested for Alzheimer's and I Don't have that disease. middlejoe

https://imgur.com/a/nibLuxB I stopped the Avodart after 3 weeks as I became concerned that I could be masking a BCR. I also discovered Avodart can have effect up to 4-6 months after stopping it.

There have been some negative posts regarding the potential benefit of Dutasteride [Avodart] against PCa. Dr Myers used Avodart in men on ADT who nonetheless produced significant levels of dihydrotestosterone [DHT]. (The true target of ADT is DHT - not testosterone [T].)

I take Avodart daily and 0.5 mg Arimidex 3x per week. I am considering supplemental Testosterone Therapy (TTh). Dr. Morgentaler thinks I am a candidate for continuous TTh. Is anyone doing TTh?

If one is trying to prevent prostate cancer cells from becoming insensitive to ADT, then is it wise to continue dutasteride while on the off cycle? If per Snuffy most of the support for PC cells comes from DHT not T, then just as stopping T reduces the DHT, is not dutasteride acting in a similar way

Snuffy Myers, had Avodart, Firmagon, later on to Zytiga which worked for almost 3 years. Now Snuffy is retired, see a new oncologist, scans show some slight elevation in pelvic lymph nodes, bone scan negative but psa now up to 30!!!.
