Hi CG,

It is confusing. Some Sweeties will be at risk, but not all. Please read the following info.

1. Sweet's syndrome itself can weaken the immune system - overactive (not underactive) immune system causes increased levels of inflammation. This can prevent certain white blood cells/immune cells from doing their job properly. How much the immune system is weakened can depend on length and severity of the flare. Most of the time a flare-up will SLIGHTLY weaken the immune, but if the flare-up is severe enough may SIGNIFICANTLY weaken the immune system. If your immune system is SIGNIFICANTLY weakened, it means you're at risk.

2. Immunosuppressant medications used to treat SS, e.g. prednisone, methotrexate, ciclosporin and others, are more of an issue, and can SIGNIFICANTLY weaken the immune system. Immunosuppressants reduce immune system activity to bring an overactive immune system under control. GOV. UK lists people taking immunosuppressants as being vulnerable.

3. COVID 19 causes shortness of breath and can lead to pneumonia. SS can affect the lungs, but it doesn't in most cases. People with existing respiratory problems are more likely to be hit harder by COVID 19.

4. In some people, SS can be triggered by respiratory infection. This means that if you have a respiratory infection, you can potentially be sicker than someone without SS.
