Although RAS is frightening to witness it is not life threatening. Doctors will therefore normally try to avoid medication which is not always successful and can have side-effects. A child's iron levels should first be checked as it is known that this can be a contributory factor. However, sufferers of frequent and severe attacks for whom medical treatment and preventative measures have failed could be fitted with a pacemaker.
