How do you motivate yourself to get exercise and stay active? What strategies have you found help you achieve your goals"?
I use to be a much bigger girl growing up back in the 70's...I joined weight watchers back then, and lost like 68 pounds and kept it off 20 years, until i hit my 40's then i had to suddenly battle a thyroid issue BUT, in the 80's I fell in love with aerobic dance and also light weights, and then i realized i also loved things like hiking too etc...This has all become a big part of who i am today...I have to do some kind of exercise every day...I cant afford the gym, but i would love to go if I could...When my knee isnt hurting I look for hills to climb now, that's my aerobics...I have some light weights i use every other day...If I hurt i just find something else i can do to keep me moving...or I might let my knee rest one day if its really ouchy...I think aqua fit is good too...(walk, swim or ride a bike, is what they told me long ago when i had some lower back stuff going on, and then the knee..) Exercise to music is fabulous!!!! Walking in nature is pure magic

Many studies have looked into what motivates everyone to change - including changing their activity level. Motivation is different for different people. That is, motivation comes from within. It may be the wedding or reunion - it may be that your doctor has said that all that they can do for you is give you pain killers until you are a candidate for surgery. It may be that you finally realize that your pain is affecting the quality of your life - being able to do things with family, going up and down stairs in your house. The list goes on.
There are some that believe that another person cannot motivate you. I agree that without motivation inside of you, any motivation instilled by another person is short-acting. But having others to talk to does help. Walking with a partner is good as long as you walk quickly. Going to a weekly fitness class is good because you get new ideas, develop a routine, and get to socialize. I am sure that you can think of ways to make getting fit more enjoyable if you set your mind to it.
