Dear Msclarke73, did you have your left kneecap (patella) resurfaced as part of your total knee replacement in 2003? Sometimes surgeons leave the patella alone, a lot of other times they shave off the undersurface and cement in a plastic button so that the plastic button articulated against the metal knee replacement component on the end of your thigh bone (the femur). If you did not have the patellar component put in, then perhaps that is an option for you on the left side. ON your right side, I don't know how much nonoperative treatments you have had, and how they have helped (or not). If you are heavy please know how important our weight is on impacting our knees. For every 10 extra pounds of weight, we experience 30-60 extra pounds of force on our knees. So if you are heavy, losing a few pounds could really help your knees. Please keep us posted on your progress. Warm regards, Mary
