Has anyone had success when applying for a disability badge. I am having problems walking any distance due to breathlessness and muscle weakness in legs. Thankyou

I too am retired and applied for attendance allowance which is the new say equivalent to pip. I didnt get it unfortunately. You have to need assistance all day and some at night it seems

Hi Bealepup

I applied and it was approved without trouble. On my first application I had to list details of all the hospital visits I'd had in the last year or so and since then I've been able to renew it without trouble. I have to pay £10 when it is renewed but I expect other local councils have their own rules. I now save all my hospital appointment letters just in case I have to fill in forms that ask for such information. I'm just like you - I appear OK most of the time but as soon as I have to walk more than a couple of hundred yards my legs and back are screaming. I worry that people will think I'm putting it on - I can get so far and them I'm done for. Good luck with your application.

I applied for mine online too but, when attaching documents, I scanned in several hospital letters listing the various conditions.

I had a phone call the following day, advising me it had been received.

My Blue Badge arrived two weeks later.

It has really given me relief and taken away the fear if becoming I'll when on public transport

Likewise, the times I have had to get off the bus, find a toilet and then wait for another bus

Hi there, I’ve never heard of a disability badge. I have systemic scleroderma and when I walk, especially when first starting out, I get horrible pain in my lower back and feel muscle weakness in my legs and have to sit down before I can try to walk again. Is this what you’re experiencing? I also have pulmonary hypertension as a side effect, and that contributes to a lot of my being short of breath when doing anything. I live in California and would like to know more about the disability badge.

This is probably a UK thing. It is a badge you put in your car to enable you to park in a disabled bay in car parks so that you do not have to walk so far to access shops etc.

I guess here in the US we call it a handicapped placard or a disability placard to put in the car. I thought a badge was something you wore. Dah!

Yes - I get same symptoms. Give it a go and apply for one. Good luck.

Hi, I'm in the Uk and I get PIP. I applied last year, including all kinds of documents including my diagnosis letter. Took a while, but I now have a Blue badge. It's a godsend cos due to skin thickening on my legs and ankles, mobility is a real problem.

There should be notes on how to apply for your council, if you're in the UK. I found these very helpful.

Go for it and good luck

Yes I have one due to the same to chronic fatigue and struggling to walk far. Go for it. Always remember you tell your worse day. Because we have days when you cannot do much at all. Make a note of how this illness affects you so you do not forget the most important.

I receive PIP for my scleroderma & have the same symptoms as yourself - this qualifies me to have a blue badge.

Are you under your GP or Health Specialist if so ask them for a letter in support of your condition, if so should not have any problems, just apply sending any supportive paperwork, should be straight forward.

I have lung fibrosis - applied for and successfully awarded blue badge without a need for an assessment - important thing is to also provide vital evidence such as hospital letters, test results such as lung function tests and list all medication and describe how breathing restriction effects ability to walk reasonable distances especially inclines. I was reluctant to apply as thought these types of illnesses would not be recognised but I was proved wrong so would encourage you to apply.
