Newly diagnosed and a little in the dark! He has started Methotrexate. Does anyone have this diagnosis and suffer from reflux problems also or are the two things separate? Thank you!

Mother of 6 yr old with Scleroderma en coup de sabre
Hi. My son has mixed connective tissue disease diagnosed age 10. He is now 14. Scleroderma is part of his condition. He had lots of stomach symptoms - reflux, bloating, burping, etc. I believe they are related to the autoimmune disease. We have managed to control them by diet and lifestyle changes. No gluten, dairy, soya, low sugar, no processed foods. The change in diet also improved his autoimmune symptoms massively, so much so we were able to stop all of his medication, stopping methotrexate about 10 months ago. If you are interested in finding out more about how diet can affect autoimmune disease here’s a link to Sarah Ballantynes paleomom website.
Of course scleroderma itself can damage the oesophagus and stomach, delaying movement of food through the stomach, and this can also cause gastric symptoms so it would be wise to get this checked out also if you haven’t already. I assume his rheumatologist is aware of the reflux symptoms. A word of warning though, conventional doctors will usually not consider that diet could contribute, and will not offer advice on this. It’s left to us as parents to find out for ourselves. That’s been my experience anyway! I hope this has helped!
Fantastic, thanks for so much for your comment and the link. This is so incredibly helpful and very kind. Thank you!
