Suppliments

I have been advised to take vitimin suppliments which all seem to say that they support the immune system. As it is our immune system that has caused this condition, is it really the right thing to do? I would be very happy to get your opinion. Thanks. Roselda

Hi there, I think that 'they support the immune system' written on a packet of multivitamins will just be advertising speak. Each individual vitamin has a role to play in our health and a specific function in the body, which is why it is important to have a diet that provides these in sufficient quantities. Often people with scleroderma have issues with digestion and it may be that they are vitamin deficient. If this is the case it is a good idea to have supplements. However, multi-vitamins will not be boosting your immune system and therefore increasing the chance that it attacks you.

I will add that most people in the UK have the risk of being deficient in Vitamin D, and this can contribute towards joint aches and pains, so this is definitely one to ensure you supplement, as diet and the lack of sun this time of year is unlikely to provide enough.

Hope that helps.

Hi Lucyjean, thanks for your reply. What you say makes a lot of sense and I must admit I do feel better for taking the supplements. They have helped immensely with the constipation I was suffering from and I also feel more supple. Take care. Roselda

Hi. I have diffused scleroderma and lots of other things connected to it! My GP took bloods and I was very deficient in vit D3. He wanted me to have a bone density scan but because my levels were so low I had to take the vit for quite a while before it could be done. This is unavailable on prescription and I now take the same supplement as my GP. It is vitamin D3 1000mg iu. You can get it online and I pay around £12 for 96 tablets, 1per day. My GP advocates everyone in this country should take it, especially those of us who are taking immunosuppressants, as we cannot sit in the sun! Hope this info helps. Take care, Kim.
