My husband has a Basal Cell Carcinoma on his forehead and a long time being passed from person to person has finally led to an appointment with a maxillo facial surgeon. We were confused as to why one of the options on offer was a dental hospital but the unit he has finally got an appointment with wants his recent dental x-rays. The lesion has grown quite large and we have been told he will need plastic surgery to repair his skin. Has anyone had experience of this and can anyone explain what the connection with dentistry is? Google has not helped.

There is no connection in this context to dentistry as such. Some maxillofacial surgeons (who have done a dental training) undertake surgery on the skin of the head and neck area (only) for skin cancer as well as surgery in the mouth and jaw. Plastic surgeons of course do so too and everywhere else in the body but there are fewer plastic surgery centres than max fax / dental centres so it depends a bit on what is available in your area. In general surgery for a BCC is quite straightforward and I’m sure they will do a good job.
