Interesting, I remember some yrs ago we began learning about the "good for you" nutrients of artichokes, but it got shifted to my "old file part of my brain". Do love the dip, I think it is pickled in most of those. Are you finding fresh ones in your grocery stores?

haven't been to the store yet ... JUST found out about this today :) Will let you know, hopefully they won't be too pricy; have never had the pickled ones, only the boiled ones dipped in butter so I could use some schoolin' on how to eat them other than stuffed coz truthfully my belly doesn't need all that bread God bless you and heal us all in Jesus name, amen! <3

The way I learned to eat them is : pull out the stem before cooking. Boil in a pressure cooker with salt, vinegar, bay leaf for approx 20 minutes, until the outer leaves come out easily, but before the artichoke falls apart.Set onto a plate and carefully pull out the leaves starting from the outside, dipping the soft insides into garlic vinaigrette, melted butter with garlic, or other herb dressing you like to make. Scrape off the soft part against your bottom teeth, discarding the stringy leaves. Keep eating until you get to the centre. Lift off the soft needle 'choke' and discard. Enjoy the artichoke heart underneath, with the rest of the sauce.

thank you! :) Question: did you see the italian stuffed artichoke recipe? does this mean if you make them this way the whole thing becomes edible? confused here .... don't take much these days LOL God bless you! <3

Whole artichoke is edible, once you snip off the leaf edges and scoop out the choke. I just steam with a slice of lemon on top & fill center with a vinegarette. Delicious!

I only had it once, when I was around 20, I just remember it tasted delicious but I never tried it again as it wasn't something eaten in my family so I forgot all about it! TY :)

been to the store and bought the 14 ounce can of artichoke hearts for $2 ... bought a tub of french onion dip, chopped them up and added to the dip, and that's how I'm eating them. A can a week with some baked Lay's tater chips. 4 or 5 chips with the dip and I'm satisfied! did I mention, I am so lazy I'm ashamed of myself, but retired life IS STILL GOOD and thank You Jesus!

Friends, artichokes are very easy to grow in most temperate climates. You can buy rooted cuttings online, plant out in the spring, you'll need a bit of space. In areas without very hard frosts, artichokes are hardy perennials that will last for years, and keep giving you plants to give away. In areas with deep frosts, you can take cuttings and overwinter these in a frost-free shed, greenhouse, or conservatory.

please note that artichokes lose their properties when cooked. In Italy we have a kind of artichokes with very stingy spines and they’re wonderful eaten raw cut in very little pieces, with olive oil, lemon, salt and a little of parmisan cheese. I don’t know if they’re available abroad, they only grow in Sardinia an Liguria.

I read even the juice from boiling them is used for artichoke tea and is very popular in the mediterraranean (sp) ... so if they lose the properties when boiling, how is the "tea" a health tonic?

Thank you for this information. This is such good news to an avid artichoke afficionado. I had a huge one yesterday, cut into quarters, thorns and choke trimmed out, boiled with lemon and garlic and dipped in lemon butter. It was so delicious, now that I've finally got my appetite back. (More elsewhere, soon).

How cool to find out something you're already doing is so beneficial! I've never been a naturalist until cancer, now I find myself turning to nature more and more for products that will help me and not kill me. I will admit, the cancer drugs scare me and I only take ibrance now.

I thought it was my big idea about eating artichokes, then when reading the article I saw where it kills breast cancer cells and then I knew I was LED THERE by Holy Spirit! Father God is so good to us! I also wanted to mention that I have great experience with swanson vitamins online and I noticed their ALE was only $2 something a bottle! had to share, I also get my ginger root from them, etc. Have a blessed Sunday! <3 I can't wait to eat some artichokes, store tomorrow! :)
