hi Marianne.
ascites is the accumulation of fluid in your peritoneal cavity (empty spaces between your internal organs). the are several causes for this occurrence. the most well known doesn't apply to you.....it's the people who have serious liver damage (cirrhosis) from drinking high amounts. of alcohol. but like I said before, there are other reasons. some people with tumors(more like stranding) in their peritoneum (abdominal cavity) are also prone to large amounts of fluid collection (ascites).. another cause can be tumors in the liver itself, whether benign or malignant.
but regardless of the reason.....the amount of fluid dictates what the treatment is and the comfort level of the patient. TRACE means exactly that....maybe a couple tablespoons...just guessing. but people with large amount of ascites may have as much as a liter or more....yikes! those patients need to have their fluid drained periodically and can be very. uncomfortable before that is done.
so bottom line.....they don't do anything for trace ascites and it's not uncomfortable. without the scan, you wouldn't even know you had it.
lengthy explanation.....sorry about that...but it is my normal MO...lol. hope this helped.
best wishes,
carole XO
