Hi Dianagarza7, I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 at age 34. I now work at SHARE Cancer Support and we have a Helpline (844-275-7427; 9:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. ET), and a range of support groups, peer counselers, seminars, and webinars that you might find helpful (sharecancersupport.org). Take care, Mary

Hi marybv,

It's so pleasing to know that you are out of cancer for 10 years. What type of cancer did you have ? Stage, size, treatment? Do you maintain any diet?

Sorry for asking so many questions, I hope you understand. Wishing you all the best.

Hi Arumana, No worries, you aren't asking too many questions. I was diagnosed with stage 1A invasive ductal carcinoma. My tumor was 1.1 cm, and I had a lumpecotmy followed by eight rounds of CMF chemotherapy, and then a bilateral mastectomy (due to family history - my mother died of metastatic breast cancer, though I am BRCA negative) and reconstruction. In terms of diet, my doctors recommended a Mediterranean one. Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have! Hope you are doing well. Take care.

Hi marybv,

Thanks for your reply. I've just read your short writing about your profile. I am so sorry to know about your mother. Sending a hug for you. I can feel you.

I was diagnosed triple negative IDC in March 2017 at the age of 41+ . It was 1.9cm and 1 lymph node affected. I did my first mammogram 8 months before the diagnosis and no sign of cancer. I did lumpectomy and chemotherapy, then genetic test revealed about brca1 positive ( without any family history). I went for BMX and just did TAH and BSO. I have daughters and very much worried about them. Knowing your mothers and yours story wanted to share mine with you. Your mother first diagnosed same age like mine. Doctors giving me lot of suggestions for my future but you and your family went through it. If you can share anything help me and my daughters future would be appreciated . Thanks.

Hi Arumana,

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Wow, you've been through a lot. I'm glad that you made the wise and brave choice to have the BMX, TAH, and BSO. How are you feeling? I hope you are recovering well.

I have a younger sister who, since she has two first degree relatives who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, is being screened very closely in Sloan Kettering's high risk group and we are grateful. Have your doctors suggested something similar for your daughters?

Hi marybv,

I am just 6 days past from my surgery, recovery so far so good. Yes I have been through a lot. I've never guessed that I could be BRCA positive. It's been rollar coaster ride to adjust with new me, new life. Constant fear was torturing me. Now I am little bit sorted.

If it's ok for you, may I know about your mothers diagnosis? Stage, treatment, lymph node involvement etc.

My daughters are small now. Genetic counselor suggested to counsel them around the age of 20.

Thanks. Take care.

Hello Arumana,

I'm glad that you are recovering well.

I'm afraid that I don't know much about my mother's stage, treatment, lymph node involvement etc. as she was diagnosed when I was about nine. I know that she had a single mastectomy and chemotherapy at that time. Her recurrance happened about nine years later when a tumor was found in a lymph node in her neck and she had radiation, more chemotherapy, and several surgical procedures.

Glad that you and your daughters are under the care of a genetic counselor, and that you are getting used to your "new normal." That was sort of a mantra of mine when I was going through treatment and surgeries, "It's different but it's ok; it's a new normal."

Take good care!

Hi Mary, I had stage 2 breast cancer 17 years ago. It came back last summer stage 4, I’m doing good and was interested in what you said about your Mother. I’m Her2 Negative now and not sure what my Mom was? She lived 21 years after her diagnosis but that was 1969, she was 30. They say that only braca is hereditary?? So may I ask what your Mom was diagnosed what type. I know you are young and sound very positive. I guess I was just thinking that it was not a coincidence I got breast cancer. But according to science Her2 is not hereditary, so I must have just got it. I hope I’m making since. Thanks I belong to the Mets group on this board, but you are the first person I saw who mentioned there Mom had it.

Hi Clair19,

I'm sorry to hear about your reoccurance, and your mother's.

I'm afraid there are many genes that can cause breast cancer but they only have a screening test for one of them, BRCA. I am BRCA negative, but I've just returned to Sloan-Kettering for further genetic testing because doctors and researchers are developing tests for other possible genetic causes of breast cancer.

My best to you.
