Havw any of you been presribed Madopar which is for Parkinsons disease. I have been taking it for more than ten years now.?
how is ir working for you, any side effects??
I will have to look that one up, i have seen this name a couple of times now. Its not one i am familar with...
Madopar is the brand name of levopdopa and benserazide combined in the UK. It is also called
co-beneldopa (generic name?) 
so, why do you ask? The first line of treatment for RLS is Parkinson's drugs and always has been. Are they still working fine for you? If they are after 10 yrs you are very lucky. In the US, that is considered an "old fashioned" Parkinson's med, but it still can work fine for some people. are you experiencning problems and that is why you ask?
Thank you for your reply. I have found my symptoms are worsening and intend to see my GP. She has always been vague avout RLS and in fact I had initially to give her a print out obtained on the Internet about RLS symtoms I thought if I could suggest another medication she would probably prescribe it but from reading all your answers and questions I do not know which one to ask for. I am now 75 so also do not know if age is a factor in the worsening of the symptons. I have only recently found this site and it is helpful
I take Madopar 125mgm x 3 daily for Parkinsons, plus Rotigotine (neupro patches) also for the PD but also for the RLS which it seems is a problem with this disease.
Strange how they are so closely related.
Your best bet is to take the info on ALL the meds along with you. We cant really tell you which one to use as its a matter of trial and error. Some of us have tried a few of the meds over the years, to find one that suits. The fact that you have been on the same med for 10 years is great. Not many of us get to use a medication for that long before we find the one we are using stops working and then its on to try another.
It is known for most of us that RLS gets worse with age.
I have been suffering from rls and plmd for several years and my neurologist has just added madopar to my medication. As its a slow release tablet i don't get the terrible side affects i had with ropinirole. I now take madopar,clonazepam and tramadol. I have found i am much more alert during the day since starting the madopar.As mentioned many times in the part here, its all about finding the right combination for you!
Out of interest Spanner, do you get any side effects at all from the madopar...or did you when you first started on it...
Being from the US ( me, Is there a good UK web site that has dru info for you guys over there? We always use rlshelp.org, which is US site, but most of the drug information is the same, not all though. But, it would give you a guide as to what classes of meds are used to treat RLS. Parkinson's meds, anti-convulsants, slep meds, etc, etc. there is an endless list and the lsit of drugs to avoid is as important. go the treatmenet page and just scroll down and read. It covers everything that there is, trust me. :o) sometimes the names are a bit different, like we don't have madopar over here in the US, but you do in the UK. That is one of the few differences. RLS does worsen with age, it is progressive and it is neurological. The more you read, the more confident you will feel at the doctors. Some doctors do not know what to do and are afraid to admit it. Those are the ones you don't want, but sometimes have to deal with especially in the UK.
You can look at the NHS Choices website, i think that gives the meds used here in the UK. But the website that nightdancer has put up is a very good website to look at, has lots of info as she has stated.
Madopar is a new one on me, but learning more about it. It might be an option for me, maybe, when the Neupro Patch stops working. I must research more on the Madopar.
No side effects from the madopar. I had terrible suicidal feelings when taking ropinirole which is why i was put on madopar. I'm taking madopar CR which is the slow release version.
