does any one know of any over the counter remedies or supplements for rls.im taking magnesium at the moment it does help a little.
My self, personally, i dont know of any OTC remedies or supplements that can be used for RLS. Lots of people find something which may help relief some of the symptoms.
If you look at some of the blogs, questions on the forum, you can see what others have tried or are trying. You might find something useful to you by reading them.
Hi there, I have suffered on and off with this too since I was young, especially when I was pregnant. Since joining this forum and reading most of the answers I came across the fact that due to low iron levels this could cause symptoms to be worse and funnily enough my iron levels were low and my RLS was crazy. I had been diagnosed with being an anaemic but hadn't bothered to take my iron pills prescribed by the doctor. But upon reading some of the blogs I started taking my pills and low and behold my RLS is not nearly as bad, thank god. It could be worth investigating yourself. You never know. I do hope you get something sorted out because RLS is a terrible thing. No-one knows what it is like unless they also have suffered. It is a nightmare. I also tried the exercises advised by another person on this website about standing on your tip toes for about 20 times when you feel your symptoms coming on. I found that they helped too. Anything is worth a try! Good luck.
Hi
After 45 years of restless legs and several different medications (none of which worked), I came across magnesium oil spray. I use 10 sprays on each leg every morning and evening, particularly around knees and calves. I also take magnesium supplements, 133mg 3 times a day. Additionally, I take 200g of slow release naproxen 3 times daily. This routine has helped enormously. If the magnesium supplement is helping your RLS, it might be worth trying the magnesium oil spray as well.
Best of luck
Please, anyone thinking of taking iron pills to help their RLS, make sure you see your doctor first as did shir20. Taking iron pills without finding out whether you need them can result in overdosing on iron.
Everyone with RLS should ask their doctor for a Ferritin Level test, its different from a normal blood test. People with RLS need to have a ferritin level of 50 or above, if below that, then you can take the iron pills with instruction from your doctor. As you can see by shir20, she has found that the iron has been helpful with her RLS symptoms.
Taking iron doesnt work for everyone, for most it doesnt make any difference, but worth having the test to see if you need iron and trying it.
I found that St. John's Wort helped slightly until I had to stop taking it as it interfered with my epilepsy meds. My grandad has found that milk of magnesium helps but that makes no difference to me.
