You might want to try switching to gabapentin. Although they are basically the same drug except you need to divide the doses, and the side effects are basically the same, some people find that the side effects that bother them on one don't bother them on the other. Multiply the pregabalin amount by 6 to get the correct dose. If you need more than 600 mg take the extra 4 hours before bedtime as it is not as well absorbed above 600 mg. If you need more than 1200 mg, take the extra 6 hours before bedtime. If you take magnesium, even in a multivitamin, don't take it within 3 hours of the gabapentin as it reduces the absorption of the gabapentin. If you take calcium don't take it within 2 hours for the same reason.
If you decide to come off the pregabalin or later gabapentin if that does not resolve your side effects, you need to do so very slowly to avoid withdrawal effects. Reduce by 25 mg - pregabalin or 100 - 200 mg gabapentin every 2 weeks. If you do so you will have no withdrawal effects.
If gabapentin has similar side effects then your next step is a low dose opioid like buprenorphine or methadone. I recommend these two over others since they are long lasting and you only have to take them once a day whereas the others only last 4 to 6 hours and have to be taken that often or you will have mini withdrawals.
When I took pregabalin for a year, I was warned that it might have a slight disinhibiting effect, and I did indeed find that I said a couple of ill-considered things to people that I probably shouldn’t have. Luckily, it wasn’t too serious, and most of the time I remained aware and managed to keep myself in check. As a slightly argumentative person anyway I have found that meditation has helped me become less judgemental and more accepting of life and other people as well as increasing empathy which tends to counteract that trait.
I absolutely hated how I felt on pregabalin and thought it might lead to my husband and my divorce. Made me super irritable and thinking that he didn’t care about me at all (which isn’t true thankfully). I didn’t have that issue with gabapentin but now I’m off that too due to what it think is a rare ototoxic side effect. And I’ve never taken large doses of either of these drugs (75 mgs pregabalin or 300-500 mgs Gabapentin). Anyway, wanted you to know you’re not alone with pregabalin.
