Methadone. For anyone taking it I’d like to know your thoughts good or bad

My neurologist is starting me on 2.5 mg methadone. The Tramadol wasn’t working well anymore. Has anyone been on methadone long term. I would love to hear anyone’s experience with this med.

Ok I guess no one is taking Methadone on this forum as I've received no response

Hi mmb, Actually many people are taking methadone in the US. That is where the elite RLS doctors are. And I have rarely come across a person who has not reported significant relief with methadone. If you type methadone in the search bar you'll find many people reporting on their experiences

Mmb, have a look at the opiods for RLS paper in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Methadone is one of the opioids they discuss. mayoclinicproceedings.org/a...

There is also a study on the longterm effects of taking an opioid for RLS featuring mainly methadone. The 5th listed reference in the Mayo Clinic Proc paper.

No experience myself. I have taken oxycontin for 2+ years and have recently switched to buprenorphine. Oxycontin worked well for tue RLS but it had difficult to accept side effects for me (listed as 'psychological' issues, eg exhaustion, restlessness and agitation, depressionlike feelings, not feeling myself, etc). Buprenorphine works better, side effects none so far, but too soon to tell.

I just asked my neurologist if he would prescribe Buprenorphine but he said that’s not something he prescribes. Instead he put me on2.5mg of methadone. I’m not real keen on taking that but I will give it a chance

Hi mmb8083. I know this is an old post but thought I'd try. I'm thinking of starting on methadone. I'm wondering if it has worked for you.

Actually methadone is the only thing that works for me. I limit taking it to maybe 2 or 3 times a week or after a few nights of little sleep so that i can gain at least a few hours of sleep. Ive heard Dr B prescribes that and since he is a world renowned RLS specialist i feel ok taking it although sparingly

Ii saw Dr. B last week and he has prescribed methadone. I have yet to start. I'm wondering about your strategy of taking it only 2-3 days a week. I always assumed that it needed to be taken every day. How do you control your RLS the other4-5 days a week?

I also have my MM card. The high THC brands are usually enough thats why i limit the methadone so as to avoid addiction as much as possible. Its my own trial and error but if Dr B ordered it for you then you are probably best to take it daily. I will most likely have to start taking daily at some point. Im just so leery about any med as i had a horrible time getting off Ropinerol.
