Good bacteria

Hi

I think Dr Mosley is attempting to improve gut bacteria. He never mentioned organic food. He mentioned probiotic yoghurt, kimchi and sourkraut. I'm going to give it a try.

Hi,

What is it for? Better sleep?

B.

Do you have gut problems then.. ?

I think we are getting an overload on what foods to eat or not eat.

I take it that this comes from a recent publication, which I haven't seen. In a tv programme a couple of years ago he said that probiotics should be unnecessary unless you've been on a course of antibiotics. As long as you regularly eat oats, which are the ideal medium to nurture the gut bacteria we pick up from unprocessed foods and contact with other people.

Hi

Yes - it was on TV last week. Might be on You Tube by now. He was talking about prebiotic. I've started eating more oats / I think they are probably less inflammatory than toast for breakfast.

Hi Folks

Don't confuse prebiotics with probiotics.

"A prebiotic is a specialized plant fibre that beneficially nourishes the good bacteria already in the large bowel or colon. While probiotics introduce good bacteria into the gut, prebiotics act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria that's already there."

This fibre should be of the soluble variety if you suffer from IBS. Insoluble fibre will wreak havoc with your poorly bowel.

I buy soluble acacia fibre from helpforibs.com

Michael Moseley took a prebiotic powder to try to reduce his insomnia.

It's a really interesting programme.

I find that my legs kick off when I can't get to sleep quickly enough or wake in the night.

Hi, I also watched the programe and found it very interesting. Have you found the acacia fibre any help for RLS? has it helped you sleep better like it did with Moseley? I would be very interested to hear what benefits you have had. Thankyou

I can't remember him recommending that not even sure what it is. At the moment I'm doing okay with the magnesium spray and supplements. I take B12 and liquid iron mixed with orange juice at night. I am also using mineral creams- Dr Organic. I am eating more lentils as well. I also have a teaspoon of organic honey from Gambian forests purchased from Holland and Barrett. I've had a few twitches and jerks if I've had alcohol but so far I've had 8 consecutive good nights.

Hi EveW, I have used the acacia fibre* in the past when my IBS was giving me gyp and I couldn't eat any fibre containing foods. As the IBS settled during 2015/2016 I haven't yet used it to see whether it helps my more recent RLS (Dec 2016 onwards). Sorry I can't be of more help.

* At the time there wasn't much easily available to me from the chemist other than the revolting flavoured Fybogel insoluble type that affected my gut badly. A search on t'internet will reveal if other soluble fibres are now available.

Michael Moseley did not mention whether he took soluble or insoluble fibre for his experiment during the tv programme. Insoluble fibre may cause bowel problems for some folk so just thought I would add the information in my previous post in case it helped anyone accessing this thoroughly excellent forum.

Gut bacteria is encouraged by plant foods, especially the fiber i plant food. It is discouraged by animal protein. Dr. Greager at nutritionfacts.org has reported on recent research on this topic in several videos. Here is one:
