It could be medication.... I recall at times when I used to suffer migraines and taking a lot of pain relief that I'd occasionally get buzzing in my ears for a time.

I have tinnitus in one ear but I think that it comes from my neck and I also have RLS. Sorry for not giving a straight forward answer!

garys. can you please tell me about tinnitus? It came up on here a few times.

Does that mean that rls will lead to that ? I'm new to the forum. Sorry if you

have to repeat. I was going to message you but maybe some other people

don't know what it is or how it's going with rls. Thank you for your time.

Hi Gary, I have a teenage son with both these conditions. I don't think they are commonly linked, but the studies maybe just haven't been done.

I have looked and looked for possible common factors, the obvious one is iron deficiency. Iron deficiency is strongly linked with rls, and iron deficiency anemia is strongly linked with tinnitus. I can't find studies as to whether low iron short of anemia is also linked to tinnitus. Possibly again never done. You could try a serum test for iron, ferriting, tbc etc, but the serum might not be the whole story. If you have inflammation in the body - and that could be hidden, say you have a gut problem, like IBD or maybe even IBS, or rheumatism - the body restricts the absorption of iron, because iron feeds inflammation. (Look up hepcidin, if you don't already know about it, and "anemia of chronic inflammation".) So even if you took extra iron in food or supplements, you'd still be low in iron. It wouldn't improve till you'd tracked down the reason for the inflammation and solved that. (Hey! So easy!)

So - try a blood test for as many markers as possible, plus inflammatory markers if you can. Remember serum ferritin will be higher if there is inflammation. Research possible B12 or folate absorption problems which might contribute to difficulties with iron metabolism. You might have to pay for your own private blood tests if the dr isn't interested.

Take iron supps if there seems to be simple deficiency - keep checking iron levels though, you can overdose on iron. You should work with a GP on it if you can get one to take an interest.

Get plenty of midday sun and take vit D supps in winter - D is linked to iron levels somehow.

Look for causes of inflammation and try to reduce them.

Anyway, that's what I would try, but I'm not a doctor. There's a lot of studies on pubmed on RLS you could read to make up your own mind.

Am v v sorry that you have both these conditions, i know its hell.
