What made you decide to quit smoking? - Quit Support
I gave up, because I didn’t want to die before my parents, but I also was feeling unwell on that very day, and I have never looked back, I have the occasional urge, but it passes quicker than thought really develops.
Hello Jillygirl As i have mentioned before on trying to encourage people on here to stop Smoking It never had a hold on me i could stop anytime. Usually for getting a better car. And the cig money paid my finance on it. I finally quit December 21st 1990. The day my Mom died of smoking related Lung disease at only 62 yrs of age. You do a great job trying to encourage people to quit smoking And there is more help than ever for people these days too. Hope your well and Take care xx.PS And that will be 30 yrs this year. But i still miss my Mom so much Brian
Thank you Brian for that encouraging reply. 30 Years must be worth celebrating. I hope you keep on treating yourself. xx
I also gave up because I didn’t like to waste money on tobacco, I’d rather give it to a charity
I gave up, because i montly felt disgusted with myself everytime i put one down. Just the thought of it make me feel sad, about how i smoked for so long.
I quit due to the environmental damage smoking causes. Plus my health.
I decided to quit for my health. With that being said also obviously for my family as well.
I gave up after being diagnosed with late onset asthma and bronchiatisis. I was fooling myself thinking that I could continue smoking with these conditions. I was always ill and struggling to breathe. What was worse that my 2 sons both with autism aged 10 and 7 at the time thought I was going to die it made them anxious everytime i developed a cough. They have so many struggles they go through daily and it was selfish of me as their mum to add to their struggles. I needed to be around for my boys. I quit for them
Hi jillygirl I gave up smoking nearly 5 years ago and never looked back. I watched my mum struggle and die with copd and that was enough to make me stop.
Its awful watching your parents die especially with copd , cancer and smoking related illness.
Thank goodness we learn. Take care. xx
I have just given you your Long term winners badge, which will show up next time you post. xxxx
Also due to the smoking ban and having to stand outside in the rain
I was diagnosed with severe COPD Emphysema and I was struggling to complete simple tasks in the garden. Giving up was the most difficult thing I have ever done but after 15 years I can never imagine why I ever smoked at all. I am intelligent and educated yet every day for 40 years I put into my mouth 40 or 50 times a day something I then set fire to!!! That is insanity. I now suffer the consequenses of that madness.
I get some urges - but as another writer said, they pass relatively quickly! So glad I quit - especially with this COVID 19.
Cheers and thank you for all the help and support from this site.
Take care and stay strong. xx
I gave up 12 weeks ago yesterday because I have health problems (kidney) and the coronavirus freaked me out. Want to be alive to see my teenage sons grow up and maybe one day be a grandad.
I voted health as it was top of my list but all the others contributed to my giving up as well 😁
With working from home during lock down I became more aware of how much I smoked and the impact it was having on my flat. The extra time from lock down made me realise smoking was debilitating me from normal every day life.
I was just tired of it, how it tied me to making sure I had all of the paraphernalia with me every time I went out, buying more etc... It was all part of a conscious decision to stop smoking, lose weight and start exercising. Going very well so far !
Not yet, very soon... re. giving up smoking.
Menthol cigs for me. I know there's a way around it - but - I need to stop now. Money first then health. Stupid me.

I was a smoker for over 40year 20 to 30 a day. I ended up with lung cancer. I had my whole lung removed so I know some of the worse consequences of smoking. Silly thing is I joined Quit Support over eight years ago, I quit smoking with their help. Then 2 months later got diagnosed with the cancer.
I do have mild C.o.p.d and get breathless , but its a small price to pay .
I am sure we can help you quit. We are all friendly and we never pressurise . We know that its a hard task and sometimes it can take more than one attempt.
I wish you luck with everthing.

Hi jenni and welcome! You’ve certainly had a rough time of it lately that’s for sure.
Quitting isn’t easy at any time, if it was we’d have all stopped years ago!
Your appointment is a month away so maybe think about how you want to quit? Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) has certainly helped a load of us quit..... I used patches and had the gum as backup but I hated the taste so never used them. Some people use the spray with mints or gum. Some quit cold turkey.
You have to want to stop smoking otherwise you won’t give yourself a chance. I didn’t do any exercise when I quit, not because I wasn’t able but I was just too lazy! But I would suggest you eat healthily as that definitely will help.
I’m sure if you spoke to your GP he/she would be delighted to help you re NRT. In the meantime change your smoking habits. If you have a cig when you first get out of bed , then don’t! Go have a glass of water instead. Don’t smoke in the house or car, wait at least 1 hour before you have a cig after you eat or drink! If you always have one with a tea/coffee then have a glass of squash instead..... you have to help yourself!
If you cut down for a couple of weeks and reduce the amount you smoke each day, put that extra money in a jar and see how much you’re saving yourself..... you’d be surprised!
As to your mobility, if you quit, eventually your lung function might improve which means you might be a bit more mobile...... now wouldn’t that be wonderful 👍👏👏
Read thru the pinned posts, shout if you need anything. We have all been where you are now so we know what you’re going thru. Try starting to reduce tomorrow and see what happens!
Good luck hun, we are all routing for you x🚭🚭🚭
