Dry, tickly cough after quitting

Hello all,

I may just be being paranoid but I wanted to ask about a cough I've had the last few days.

I'm 33 and I quit smoking 14 days ago after smoking for 10 years. When I smoked I would smoke around 5 cigarettes a day, sometimes less and sometimes more but never more than 7/8 in a day (and that would be very rare). I'm using NRT patches, one per day, and they are really helping. I'm not craving and am really pleased with my progress.

However, the last 3 days I have had a dry tickly sensation in my throat that quite irritating. It's not making me have coughing fits but I feel I need to do one cough to try and "scratch" the itch. Today I've done it about a dozen times over 12 hours and I can still feel the itch in my throat. I'm not coughing up any mucus, although I can feel some in my throat the last few days but I can't seem to bring it up. I don't feel ill or like I have a cold/flu and I feel well in myself.

I've seen adverts recently saying that a cough can be a sign of lung cancer so I'm getting a bit worried.

Does what I'm experiencing sound normal?

It's normal just you body attempting to clear itself stick with it 14 days is awesome Well Done!!

Hi proud quitter. Firstly congrats on your smoke free days. Well done you. Your cough is probably from stopping the smokes. I had the same tickle for a few days, it stopped after about a week. Even now after 31 days i still get that itch now and then. I am not a doctor but i think unless you are coughing up blood, i dont think you would have cancer. If you are really worried speak to your doctor, but i think it is fairly normal for your body to react in this way. Stay strong and congrats again

Thank you both. The tickle has gone today but my throat feels a bit rough from coughing. I sent the stop smoking adviser a text to ask her...she said it's completely normal. Just need to drink plenty of fluids :) I'm happy with a little temporary cough as long as I'm smoke free. Feels sooo good...and I'm already noticing how much money I'm saving.

Well done on getting to a month Zippy, you must feel wonderful. We can kick this habit :)
